The elderly still remember the times when continuous wars raged in Karaz Angkor. The region, treasured for its precious ores and strategically important, was heavily fought for by Orcs and Dwarfs, with Human armies casually intervening. A small Orc outpost had been established half way to the top of one of the highest mountains, Kath Mandoom. Winters were long, shortly interrupted by summers that did not deserve that name, and support was limited. Only rarely did the outpost receive news back from the homeland, let alone goods or support. To keep his garrison motivated and distracted during the dull hours of guard, watching out for an enemy that would never come, the local commander had established a blood bowl league. The learning curve was long and flat, but with nothing else to do, the participants soon became skillful experts. The years went by, and while countless balls and occasionally goblins were thrown under the peak of Kath Mandoom, the world around changed. A fragile peace had been established between the Orcish Empire and the Dwarf Kingdoms, both equally threatened by common enemies outside Karaz Angkor. Diplomatic crises had to be overcome, new embassies established, warriors reintegrated. They were busy times, and seemingly, nobody had remembered to inform the small garrison that the war was over. Which nearly led to disaster, when a Dwarf caravan, on its way to establish a trade route with the Orc capital, was passing by the outpost. Having learned nothing else than fighting and playing a violent sport fancied by all nations of Karaz Angkor, the Orcs of Kath Mandoom decided to stay at their outpost, to lay their weapons down (for the time being) and to send their best men to defend their honor not on the battle field but on the blood bowl pitch. They soon became equally feared and respected as the Karaz Highland Raiders. |
