At more than 2,000 years old, Mordock "Night-Wind" Lustig has seen more than his fair share of mayhem on and off the Bloodbowl field. Though there are no records to confirm his claim, Lustig insists that before he was turned he played on the first human Bloodbowl team, which was decimated 12-3 by the Cerulean Sidewinders, a legendary lizard-man team that some say invented the game of Bloodbowl.

Proud to a fault, Baldur Lebenserv refers to his position as "half-back" rather than "thrall."

"I may feed my overlord off the pitch, but when I'm out there playing, I'm much more than a mere 'blood barrel,' " he insists with a winning smile that has gotten him vamp-slapped hundreds of times. "Out there on the pitch, we're all equal. That's my chance to show that I can mean just as much to this team as my neck-nibbling overlords."

Descended from a long line of slaves and vassals, Lebenserv was brought to Darkwater by Caleb Killchild, who murdered Lebenserv's wife and daughter during a blood-frenzy four years ago. Though he claims not to be motivated by revenge, it's clear that Lebenserv plays with a passion most Thralls lack.

"It's almost as if he's buried all of his emotions into this sport," explains Deathkiss Coach Lord Bishop Mortimer Luxenbell. "He no longer even remembers a life before coming to Darkwater and learning to play the game. His wife, his daughter--no memories, none at all. It's tragic really, to see him practice handoffs with Killchild, the scourge smirking with the knowledge of what he did to that good woman and that child of God. Normally, I care very little about winning or losing, but when I see Lebenserv make a play out there, when he's got the ball in his hands ... I could nearly weep for how desperately I long for a touchdown."

The youngest player on the Deathkiss squad, Finnigan “Fresh-Meat” Kent doesn't even know that he is playing on a vampire team. Recruited from beyond Mount Dunkledonner, Kent remains convinced that he is playing for a physically gifted human team that simply can't afford Ogres.

"Man, these guys are pretty damn strong and quick," he says. "They move like elves but they can bash like black orcs. I've never seen anything like it. I think we really have a chance to do something special this season. The only problem is I think some of the fellas might be a bit little light in the boots, if you know what I mean. During our first practice, I saw that Darkleson guy kiss Fleischbinder on the neck. Then Fleischbinder passes out cold. Now look, I got nothing against what you do off the field in your own time, but we need to find a way to calm that stuff down during the game."
