Cyrus the Great Cyrus II the Great (about 576 - July, 529 BC) was a king of Persia, famous for his military prowess and mercy. He is considered to be the first significant king of Persia and the founder of the vast Persian Empire; he was however not the very first king of Persia, nor the first king of the Achaemenid Dynasty.
The name "Cyrus" (a transliteration of the Greek Kυρoς) is the Greek version of the Persian Koroush or Khorvash meaning: "Like the sun" -- in Persian khour means "sun" and vash is a suffix of similarity.

Artaphernes, more correctly Artaphrenes, was the brother of Darius Hystaspis, and satrap of Sardis.
It was he who received the embassy from Athens sent probably by Cleisthenes in 497 BC, and subsequently warned the Athenians to receive back the "tyrant" Hippias.

Subsequently he took an important part in suppressing the Ionian revolt, and after the war compelled the cities to make agreements by which all differences were to be settled by reference. He measured out their territories in parasangs and assessed their tributes accordingly (Herodotus vi. 42). In 492 he was superseded in his satrapy by Mardonius (Herodotus V. 25, 30-32, 35, &c.; Diod. Sic. x. 25).

Themistocles (ca. 528 BC-462 BC) was a leader in the Athenian democracy during the Persian War. Themistocles favored the expansion of the navy to meet the Persian threat and persuaded the Athenians to spend the surplus generated by their silver mines on building new ships - the Athenian navy grew from 70 to 200 ships.
He was the son of Neocles, an Athenian of no distinction and moderate

Miltiades (c.540 BC–c.488 BC) was an aristocrat from a major family of Athens. He made himself ruler of Gallipoli in Turkey, and probably fought against Darius I and his Persian forces. He was overthrown in 492 BC, after which he fled to Athens and soon served the city-state as a general.

Callimachus was polemarch in Athens in 490 BC, and was one of the commanders at the Battle of Marathon.
As polemarch, Callimachus had a vote in military affairs along with the 10 strategoi, the generals, such as Miltiades. Miltiades convinced Callimachus to vote in favour of a battle when the strategoi were split evenly on the matter.

At Marathon, Callimachus commanded the right wing of the Athenian army. The right and left wings (the left wing commanded by the Plataeans) surrounded the Persians after a seemingly suicidal charge by the centre line. Although the Greeks were victorious, Callimachus was killed during the fighting.

Leonidas was a king of Sparta, the seventeenth of the Agiad line. He succeeded, probably in 489 or 488 BC, his half-brother Cleomenes I, whose daughter Gorgo he married.
In 480 he was sent with about 7000 men to hold the pass of Thermopylae against the army of Xerxes (see Battle of Thermopylae). The smallness of the force was, according to a current story, due to the fact that he was deliberately going to his doom, an oracle having foretold that Sparta could be saved only by the death of one of its kings: in reality it seems rather that the ephors supported the scheme half-heartedly, their policy being to concentrate the Greek forces at the Isthmus.

Eurybiades was the Spartan commander in charge of the Greek navy during the Persian Wars.
He was the son of Eurycleides, and was chosen as commander in 480 BC because the other Greek city-states did not want to serve under an Athenian, despite the Athenians' superior naval skill. He was, however, assisted by the Athenian Themistocles, who led most of the fighting.

Pausanias was a Spartan general of the 5th century BC. He was responsible for the Greek victory over Mardonius and the Persians at the Battle of Plataea in 479 BC, and was the leader of the Hellenic League created after the end of the Persian Wars. In 478 BC he was suspected of conspiring with the Persians and was recalled to Sparta. He took refuge in a temple, which was then boarded up so he could not escape; he refused to come out, however, and starved to death. Cimon and the Athenians then became the leaders of the Hellenic League, which later turned into the Delian League.

Mardonius was a Persian commander during the Persian Wars with Greece in the 5th century BC.

He was the son of Gobryas and the son-in-law of Darius I of Persia, whose daughter Artozostra he had married. After the Ionian Revolt, Mardonius was sent in 492 BC to punish Athens for assisting the Ionians. He first stopped in the Ionian cities to depose the Persian tyrants and set up democratic

Cimon (died 450 BC?) was a major figure of the 470s BC and 460s BC in Athens, and the son of Miltiades. His mother was Hegesipyle, the daughter of Olorus the King of Thrace. His father died in jail because he was unable to pay the fine that was levied against him. The fine passed to Cimon and it was his sister's fiancé Callias, a very wealthy Athenian, who paid it so that he could marry Cimon's sister Elpinice.

Callias was the head of a wealthy Athenian family, and fought at the battle of Marathon (490) in priestly attire.
Some time after the death of Cimon, probably about 445 BC, he was sent to Susa to conclude with Artaxerxes, king of Persia, a treaty of peace afterwards misnamed the peace of Cimon. Cimon had nothing to do with it, and he was totally opposed to the idea of peace with Persia.
