The U.S. Army M4 medium tank was specifically designed to favor speed and mobility over firepower. This was in accordance with U.S. Army doctrine that the tank would function as an infantry support weapon, and thus would have to be capable of keeping up with rapidly moving ground troops. To some extent, the M4 was not designed to fight other tanks.

* Decorations: Purple Heart
* Hometown: Peyton, Iowa
* Parents: William and Margaret Ryan
* Brothers: Peter, Daniel and Sean

In 1942 all four of William and Margaret Ryan's sons—Daniel, James, Peter and Sean—enlisted in the United States Army. Although they were originally all in the same company of the 29th Infantry Division for a period of time, the four brothers were reassigned to different units following the loss of the Sullivan Brothers in November of 1942. James, the youngest of the brothers, qualified as a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Division and participated in Operation Overlord on June 6, 1944.

Like many of his fellow paratroopers, Ryan's stick was dropped about 20 miles from its planned drop zone, and Ryan ended up near the town of Neuville. Setting out for his unit's rally point, Ryan eventually joined a group of paratroopers who were assembled to defend a bridge over the Merderet River at Ramelle.

On June 13th, while scouting near Ramelle for Germans, Ryan and two other paratroopers encountered a group of Rangers led by Captain Miller. Ryan was stunned to learn that all of his brothers had been killed in action recently, and that Miller and his Rangers had been sent to retrieve him so that he could return to the States. It was Miller's turn to be surprised when Ryan refused to leave his comrades, who had strict orders to defend Ramelle's bridge. The Rangers decided to stay behind and help the paratroopers, although Miller took care to keep Ryan close to him during the battle for Ramelle. Having already lost two of his men while searching for Ryan, Miller had no intention of letting Ryan get himself killed.

* Rank: General

George Catlett Marshall was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania on December 31, 1880. He attended the Virginia Military Institute and graduated in 1901. In February of 1902 he entered the United States Army, and served as an officer in various capacities before, during, and after World War I.

He was appointed the chief of staff of the Army in 1939 by President Roosevelt, and was instrumental in preparing America for war. Marshall was promoted to General of the Army in December of 1944.

Marshall retired in 1945, but was later appointed as secretary of state in 1947. It was at this time that Marshall proposed a program, the Marshall Plan, which was designed to rebuild Europe following the devastation that it had suffered during World War II.

In 1947 Time magazine named Marshall their Man of the Year, as they had done previously in 1943. In 1949 he left the State Department because of health issues, and was later named the president of the American Red Cross. In 1951, during the Korean War, Marshall held the position of secretary of defense for one year. In 1953 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for The Marshall Plan.

Days after the D-Day assault on June 6, 1944, Private James Frederick Ryan (Nathan Fillion) was part of a 101st Airborne Division unit holding the French village of Neuville. Approached by Captain John Miller of the 2nd Ranger Battalion and informed that his brothers had been killed in combat, a distraught Ryan expressed his disbelief, informing Miller that his brothers were still in grammar school. Miller, looking for a Private James Francis Ryan of Iowa, realized that a simple mistake had been made and assured Ryan that his brothers were probably fine. Ryan, who had planned to take his brothers fishing when he returned home, was shaken up by the incident.

Lyle (William Marsh) was one of a small group of 101st Airborne Division paratroopers who were tasked with defending a bridge that crossed the Merderet River at the small French village of Ramelle. The paratroopers were later joined by a small Ranger squad who helped them prepare a defense against an expected German counterattack.

During the German attack Lyle participated in an assault on a disabled Tiger tank, and shot one of the tank crew point blank in the face when he emerged from the turret hatch. As a handful of paratroopers attacked the tank, the Germans responded with a 20mm flak gun that tore into the tank and its attackers. Lyle was seriously wounded, and as he crawled away from the carnage he was shot in the chest by a passing German soldier.
