Kingsguard
A knight and member of Aerys II's Kingsguard. He was called the Sword of the Morning.
He was Prince Rhaegar Targaryen's oldest and closest friend.
Ser Arthur led the force that defeated the Kingswood Brotherhood.
Ser Arthur, Ser Oswell Whent, and Ser Gerold Hightower are ordered by Rhaegar to guard Lyanna Stark at the Tower of Joy when Robert's rebellion breaks out. They are still there after Aerys II is killed and Eddard Stark comes to take her back. They refuse to yield, and Eddard and his companions are forced to kill all three.
Called Barristian the Bold. He is a member of House Selmy, Lord Commander of the Kingsguard and a member of the small council and is considered by many to be the greatest living knight.
Ser Barristan became a member of the Kingsguard in his twenty-third year during the reign of King Jaeherys II. He continued to serve King Aerys II and fought with Rhaegar at the Trident. He fought until too wounded to continue and was pardoned by Robert. Robert named him Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, and he continued to serve in that capacity until dismissed by Joffrey soon after Robert's death.
Elder son of Lord Tywin Lannister. He is a knight and member of the Kingsguard.
He has secretly fathered three children with his twin sister Cersei: Joffrey, Myrcella, and Tommen. Everyone believes they are the children of King Robert Baratheon.
Jaime was raised to the Kingsguard at the tournament of Harrenhal in the year of the false spring. During the sack of King's Landing by his father, he killed Aerys II Targaryen in violation of his oaths. He was allowed to remain on the Kingsguard.
He is with Robert when he comes to Winterfell to see Lord Eddard Stark. While there, he is caught in the act of having sex with Cersei by Eddard's son Bran, whom he pushes off a tower, leaving him crippled.
When he learns of Catelyn's abduction of Tyrion, he accosts Eddard in the streets of King's Landing and has his men kill Eddard's escort. He flees the city and joins Lord Tywin at Casterly Rock to raise an army to secure Tyrion's release.
He leads a large force against the Lords Vance and Piper near the Golden Tooth and sends them reeling, finally ending at Riverrun, where he defeats another army gathered by Ser Edmure Tully, whom he captures. He then divides his men into three camps to besiege the castle. He is ambushed and captured by Robb Stark.
While on campaign, he is named Lord Commander of the Kingsguard by Joffrey after he dismisses Ser Barristan Selmy.
A knight and youngest son of Lord Mace Tyrell. He is young and handsome with a mass of brown curls.
Ser Loras advances to the final round of the Hand's tournament by distracting Ser Gregor Clegane's warhorse by riding a mare in heat. Ser Gregor nearly kills him in a rage before Sandor Clegane intervenes. Ser Loras, grateful for being saved, forgoes the last round and conceeds the tournament to Sandor.
Ser Loras stays in King's Landing after the tournament for a long time afterwards, working with Lord Renly Baratheon to get King Robert Baratheon to cast aside his queen, Cersei, and marry Ser Loras's sister Margaery instead.
He flees King's Landing with Lord Renly shortly before Robert's death and helps convince his father to support Renly's claim for the throne.
Loras is given a place on Joffrey's Kingsguard for his service in the battle against Stannis.
A legendary knight of the Kingsguard, Ser Ryam served as Lord Commander.
Hand of the King. Ser Ryam was the best knight of his day, but one of the worst Hands in history.

Sandor is heavily muscled and has black hair, his face was horribly disfigured by his brother, Gregor, when he was five or six. He had been playing with a toy made for Gregor that his brother did not even care about, and his brother thrust his face into the coals of a brazier.
He has refused a knighthood because his horrid brother is a knight, and he therefore sees their vows as empty. Sandor wins the Hand's tournament after Ser Loras concedes to him when he saves Loras's life.
When Joffrey becomes king, he elevates Sandor to the Kingsguard, despite the fact that he is not a knight.
