Taught martial arts by his adoptive grandfather, Gohan, who raised him out in the wilderness. He is extremely strong, agile, and virtually fearless. He'll take on any fight no matter what the odds are if he thinks that someone has been wronged, and he'll usually win. When the Saiyans arrive on Earth, Goku learns the mysterious secret of his own past: he is a Saiyan named Kakarot. Goku was sent to Earth as a baby to grow up and destroy the planet, but a head injury as a child scrambled Goku's programming. Instead of growing up to become a destructive super-warrior, he became innocent and pure of heart, fighting for good. Goku is peaceful, good natured, honest, loving to his family and friends, loyal, trustworthy, and brave. If he has a weakness, it is his trusting nature. He always finds the "good" in people when others don't see it, though Goku's enemies sometimes take advantage of his naive trust. He trained under Master Roshi and wears his symbol until he trains under King Kai, whose symbol he wears on the back but keeps Roshi's on the front. Goku marries Chi-Chi, and Together they have two sons: Gohan and Goten. When Cell blows himself up in hopes to destroy Earth Goku uses his instant transmision tecnique to transport them both to King Kai's place killing Goku along with King Kai but unfortunetly not Cell. Gohan eventauly kills Cell but Goku decides to stay in Other World and train. There Goku surpasses Super Saiyan 2 and reaches Super Saiyan 3. He one day visits Earth for a tournament but is told by Supreme Kai about Buu who he then battles. When Goku's 1 day limit is up he is forced to return to Other World but to his great surprise finds Gohan is infact alive and training in secret with Supreme Kai. Eventaly Goku beats Buu and comes back to live on Earth and in GT he reaches the great level of SSJ4.

Considered the single most powerful character in DBZ, Vegito is the result of the potara fusion of Goku and Vegeta. We see Vegito in the late Buu Saga when Goku returns from Other World. Vegito handles Buu with great ease after going Super Saiyan 2. However, Vegito is extremely cocky, and merely plays with Buu rather than getting to the point and destroying him. At one point Buu manages to turn Vegito into a piece of candy, but Vegito manages to beat Buu up so much while he's a piece of candy Buu has to change Vegito back to normal. Vegito continues to waste time toying with Buu until Buu manages to absorb the fused Saiyans. Although the fusion is supposed to be permanent, Buu's magical enzymes cause Vegito to un-fuse. Once they are separated, the satisfied Vegeta removes his earring and crushes it in his fist.

Goku and Chi Chi's first son, named after Goku's adoptive grandfather Gohan. In early DBZ, Gohan is put through events that would traumatize any little kid. One day, he's kidnapped by his uncle Radditz, and watches as a furious battle ensues between Goku, Piccolo and his uncle. When Radditz proves his superiority in power, Gohan's anger explodes and he manages to seriously injure Radditz, which neither Goku nor Piccolo had been able to do. After Goku's & Radditz death, Piccolo leaves Gohan in the wilderness to train. Gohan is forced to grow up quickly, he becomes attached to Piccolo, his teacher, and idolizes him. When Gohan's Saiyan power becomes mixed with his human emotions, he is able to summon an unbelievable amount of power. This power is released when Gohan becomes extremely angry. When Cell learns of this he purposely pushes Gohan until he finaly explodes with rage and then goes SSJ2, the first person to ever reach this stage. With a broken arm, Gohan kills Cell using a one-handed Kamehameha. Gohan is the only Saiyan to become Mystic, which is a special ability granted by Old Kai that allows Gohan access to his highest power level without having to go Super Saiyan at all. Gohan meets Videl in high school, who suspects that something is fishy about the Great Saiyaman. They become good friends after she catches him in costume without the mask, and he teaches her how to fly. They fall in love, and at the end of DBZ, they have a daughter named Pan. Akira Toriyama originally wanted Gohan to become the main character, of the series, but the fans wanted Goku back, so Toriyama drifted away from Gohan to focus more on his father again. After the Buu Saga, Gohan gives up fighting and finally achieves his mother's dream for him to become a scholar. Throughout GT, he fights from time to time, but he generally remains a glasses-wearing nerd.

The son of Bulma and Vegeta He is around 18 when he first appears in DBZ to stop Frieza from destroying Earth. He is from the future and has witnessed a threat to Earth which cannot be stopped in that time. He has come back in time to try to save the Earth of his time, only to find our heroes in Earth facing their own peril. Much to the amazement of our friends, Trunks immediately turns Super Saiyan and defeats Frieza and King Cold. He gives Goku medicine to prevent his death from heart disease and tells them of Earth's coming predicament. The Z Fighters immediately go into training, and Trunks returns to his own time. Trunks returns to our timeline again in the Android Saga to ensure that the Androids do arrive on Earth and are stopped. He is also born during this saga, so we have the opportunity to see him both as a teenager and a baby at the same time. He continues to exist as a boy and a teen until the end of the Cell Saga, when the older Trunks returns to his original timeline and we see the baby grow up in DBGT.

Son of Vegeta and Bulma, Trunks is only an infant when he first appears in DBZ during the Android Saga. He has purple hair like his grandfather Dr. Briefs, but his facial features, stance and strong Saiyan pride clearly show that he is a descendant of the Saiyan royal line. He has a sister named Bulla who is about 12 years younger than he is. His role becomes much larger by the Buu Saga, at which point Trunks is 8 years old and fantastically strong for his age. He goes Super Saiyan while training with Vegeta in the gravity room, an event that comes as a shock to all considering his young age. Filled with pride, Chibi Trunks is adventurous and constantly looks for stronger opponents to challenge, much like his father. During the final episodes of DBZ, Trunks, who is now 18, appears to be developing the same personality as Future Trunks. He can be seen as adult Trunks throughout GT as well. Trunks is born in the year 766 AD, and is 29 years old by the end of GT.

The second child of Goku and Chi-Chi, Goten is born in 767 AD. Goten resembles his father very much, and their facial features are almost identical. By the time Goten is born, his father has already died in the Cell Saga, and so Goten never gets to know his father until about the age of 7 or 8 when Goku returns to Earth for a day for a World Tournament, which is the day that the two first meet in a brief but touching scene. Goten turns Super Saiyan at a much younger age than his brother Gohan or his father. Goten is famous for his mispronunciation of his father's move, as "Kamekameha!". Aside from that, Goten has only one other attack which he calls "Totsugeki", which translates literally to "Attack!". We see Goten gown up in the very last couple of episode in Dragonball Z and all of Dragonball GT. When he's grown up he doesn't really resemble Goku like he used to and isn't really as much of a fighter anymore. He was orginaly supposed to go with Trunks and Goku on the search for the Black Star Dragon Balls in DBGT. But was left behind when Pan snuck aboard. When Baby comes to Earth he is among the first to be put under his control.

Hail Mary Pass
An ancient and wise master of martial arts, Roshi has accumulated great power and knowledge. Because he has lived for countless years on a deserted island with only a turtle for companionship, he is also called the 'Turtle Hermit.' His home, the Kame house, continues to serve as a gathering place for the good guys. Although he may appear strange, frail and harmless, Master Roshi is indeed a great warrior. He originally trained Goku and Krillin when they were young boys. The first earthling to ever understand how to nurture and control the Power of Light, Roshi trains Goku and Krillin in its use. It was Master Roshi who taught Goku the Kamehameha attack. Master Roshi's Rival is the Crane Elder.

A longtime friend and ally of Goku's, though he was once a notorious bandit. He is sometimes accompanied by Puar, his devoted cat companion. In the heat of battle against the Saiyans, Yamcha volunteers to fight the Saibamen instead of Krillin but is killed. He and Bulma were once together, and often illicit sparks fly for each other. Eventually Bulma moves on to Vegeta. Later in the series he quits fighting and can usually be seen at hanging out at Capsule Corp.

The son of King Piccolo, Piccolo followed his father's plans, until the beginning of DBZ. During the Saiyan Saga, he means only to join the side of good, for the time being, but ends up on their side for good. Gohan helped him to become the Piccolo we now see. Even Goku helped. He later fuses with Nail and Kami, which makes him the strongest fighter on Earth. (For the time being.) Though he is a strong fighter and helps out in every series a lot, he can not match a Super Saiyan's powers.

A master of telepathy, Chiaotzu has the power to stop people in their tracks and to communicate telepathically. This white-skinned, red-checked little being is the devoted companion of Tien. A strong fighter in his early days, Chiaotzu does not hesitate to throw himself onto Nappa's back and self-destruct in an attempt to save his friends. However, his power level does not increase as dramatically as the other Z Fighters. Thus, Chiaotzu is not a major warrior in the later episodes of Dragon Ball Z.
