This seemingly immortal ruined oak has been in a state of decay for as long as anyone can remember and has changed little in the past centuries. It's upper crown fell apart ages ago, and it is now a cave with branches growing from its roof. Despite this, it is still growing vigorously, even though its crumbling trunk is completely hollow. Two centuries ago, the hollow of the tree was large enough to seat 20 people inside, but the Oak has grown new wood since, thus diminishing the space within its walls.
An old poem sums up this Oak nicely:
"Time has made thee what thou wast, King of the Woods, and time has made thee what thou art, a cave for owls to roost in..."

Not far from the Yew at Tandridge, there stands another such tree in a churchyard at Cromhurst - a tree that is even older than the first. This Yew has been battered by storms and time, but it still stands as a testimony to the strength of its kind. It's lower trunk is completely hollow and was once used as a small room - in fact, a wooden door was mounted on the tree centuries ago and chairs were put inside. None use the tree for such things now. In 1845, a storm struck the tree and collapsed part of it, but it still survives to this day, though many of its outer limbs are bleached and dead.

note:
Yew trees have many amazing abilities that grant them near immortality. Their slow, twisting growth gives their trunks great strength, and their hollow interiors remove needless weight from their structures. Even more amazing is the recently discovered fact that Yew trees can slow their growth to nearly nothing for long periods of time. This prevents the tree from growing too large and thus being destroyed in a storm. Many yews enter this dormant state after achieving a large enough size and living for 1,000+ years. They will then remain in this state until their surroundings change and force them to act.
