Gail Sayers excelled in the preseason quickly rising to the top defensive player on the Lady Jayhawks squad. However, she was brutally fouled in her fourth regular season game against the Banana Slugs and suffered a niggling injury. Unable to tolerate weakness, coach (turned player-coach) Maxine Magino (who elected herself MVP of the game against the slugs despite not playing a down), cut her from the squad and order her re-cloned. Maxine Mangino, formerly the coach of the Lady Jayhawks, furious after the Hawks' second loss on the regular season and inability to keep the lead against Pain State (which ended in a tie), instated herself with full eligiblity and tru-freshman status as a player-coach. In her first game against the Banana Slugs, in which she failed to even play a single down in a losing effort, she elected herself MVP of the game.
