Columbine - Aquilegia canadensis
This is one of our most familiar and beautiful wildflowers. It has fascinating hollow spur-like flowers that appear to be two flowers in one; an inner yellow flower that is surrounded by an elegantly spurred red outer flower. Hummingbirds find it irresistable! Blooming in late spring, it reaches a height of 2 to 3 feet. It does best in dappled shade, but grows easily in full sun.

Cardinal Flower - Lobelia cardinalis
The brilliant red spires of the Cardinal Flower can bloom for a month or longer. Occurring naturally in marshes and wooded streambanks, it requires moist, rich soil and responds magnificently to cultivation. Pollinated by hummingbirds, Cardinal Flower grows best in partial shade. Short lived, it may require replanting every few years, but is well worth the effort.

Black-eyed Susan - Rudbeckia hirta
This, the best known of all wildflowers, is also the easiest to grow. A single plant can produce an extravagant floral display over much of the summer and planted in masses it is simply stunning!. A self-seeding biennial, it is not picky about soil conditions and will grow just about anywhere. A green thumb is not a prerequisite for success with this popular plant!

Joe Pye Weed - Eupatorium maculatum
A native of damp meadows and marshes, Joe Pye Weed is perfect for planting along streambanks and pond edges. It is also an outstanding garden plant and will flourish in any rich garden soil. Reaching heights of 4 to 6 feet, it is topped with huge clusters of magenta flower heads on tall straight stems that butterflies find irresistable! Grows best in full sun with moist soil conditions but will also tolerate some shade.

Canada Milk Vetch - Astragalus canadensis
This striking member of the legume family resembles Wild Lupine with its pagoda-like towers of creamy yellow flowers arising from the contrasting dark green leaves in mid-summer. Growing in full sun, in well drained soil, it is an important food source for birds as it holds its seed into late fall and early winter. Canada Milk Vetch is also a butterfly attractor and is the host plant for the Western Tailed Blue butterfly larvae.

Meadow Rose - Rosa blanda
This is as close as you can get to a 'thornless' rose. Naturally occurring in prairies, meadows and open woodlands, Meadow rose has only a few small prickles at the base of the plant and has no thorns on the flower stems. Growing 3 to four feet tall, it prefers moist soil in full sun or part shade.

Red Milkweed - Asclepias incarnata
Naturally found in low-lying areas at the edge of swamps and ponds, Red Milkweed produces rich clusters of deep rose-purple to pale-rose colored flowers from June through August. One of the very best food plants for Monarch Butterfly larvae, the caterpillars will eat the leaves right off! But don't worry, the reward is all the butterflies that come later. Plant some this year to attract Monarchs to your garden!

Golden Alexanders - Zizia aurea
King Midas himself must have touched the bright bunches of golden flowers on this spring blooming beauty. The margins of the thick deep green leaves are punctuated with small yellow teeth, giving the plant season-long interest.

Mountain Mint - Pycnanthemum virginianum
Clusters of white blossoms contrast well with the glossy dark green foliage of this plant. Blooming from mid-summer into the autumn it has the added benefit of a great mint aroma. A magnet for butterflies and hummingbirds, it was once used by native peoples as a tonic.
