The former Ginger Spice, pop singer Geri Halliwell was born August 6, 1972 in London; a onetime topless model and Turkish game show hostess, in March of 1994 she answered an advertisement for an all-girl vocal group, and with fellow applicants Victoria Adams, Melanie Brownand Melanie Chisholmformed the nucleus of what later (with the addition of fifth member Emma Bunton) became the Spice Girls. The biggest pop phenomenon of the late 1990s, the Spice Girlsenjoyed a series of chart-topping singles like "Wannabe, " "Say You'll Be There" and "2 Become 1; " the group's unofficial leader, Halliwell was commonly known in the press as Ginger Spice, notorious for her garishly provocative costumes, thick make-up and saucy behavior. As the Spice Girls' star continued to skyrocket, they even starred in a film, 1997's Spiceworld; however, after weeks of speculation, Halliwell officially left their ranks in mid-1998 amidst rumors of considerable in-fighting. After exiting the group, her image underwent a radical revamp, adopting a natural, demure look much more in keeping with her next job -- in the fall of 1998, to the shock of many onlookers, she was named a United Nations ambassador, additionally taking up the cause of breast cancer awareness. Halliwell returned to music in mid-1999 with "Look at Me," which debuted on the UK pop charts at the number two spot; the album Schizophonicfollowed a few weeks later.

Spice Girl Emma Bunton wasn't the first to venture off from her dance-pop band the Spice Girlsfor a solo career. Melanie C.was most triumphant with her 1999 debut A Northern Starwhile Melanie B.and ex-Spice Geri Halliwellearned mild reviews. But like her fellow musical mates, Baby Spice aimed for solo success during the new millennium. However, it wouldn't have been nearly as possible if it weren't for her millions and massive praise made while fronting one of Britain's biggest pop acts to emerge during the 1990s.

Emma Lee Bunton was born on January 21, 1976, in Barnet in north London. Her father, Trevor, and mother, Pauline, split when Emma was 11, but the event wasn't traumatic like it is for most children of divorce. She was already busy with extracurricular activities such as modeling and doing commercials. Bunton's time spent at St. Theresa's Roman Catholic primary school was typical, yet Bunton's passion for her hobbies turned full-scale as she spent her formal theater years at Sylvia Young Theatre School. Already a natural in front of the camera, she left secondary at 16 and began studying drama at Barnet Technical College. It would be several years later that she met the group that would make her a star. Bunton was still a young, bubbly teenager when she was christened Baby Spice in 1993. The rest of the decade was a whirlwind with winning the world over with the Spice Girls' infectious pop energy. Five years spanned a career in entertainment, and at the dawning of the new millennium, Emma Bunton had other ideas. She was now a woman in her twenties and a bright mind of creative ideas. Her soul sisters were already moving on with solo projects and Baby Spice wouldn't be left behind.

She guested on Tin Tin Out's "What I Am in 1999, but two years later, a fresh-faced Bunton returned with the catchy "What Took You So Long?" It shot to number one during its first week of release in mid-April, sustaining a two week reign. Bunton became the only Spice Girl to have a solo single stay at number one for more than one week.

Beyoncé Knowles is one of the many impressionable artists of the new millennium, but an individual in her own right. She's praised for her wildly inventive presentations in music and film, and respected for her down-to-earth persona. With her grace, beauty, charm, and gift for entertaining, Knowles has become a star and an American icon.

Born in Houston in the fall of 1981, Beyoncé Giselle Knowles started performing at age seven. From dance classes to singing in the church choir, Knowles was a natural. She and cousin Kelly Rowlandmet Latavia Robersonduring this time, and the trio formed a group with Letoya Luckett. Mathew Knowles, Beyoncé's father and Rowland's legal guardian, signed on to be the girls' manager. This situation would ultimately lead to the formation of one of the greatest female R&B groups of all time -- Destiny's Child.

Destiny's Childmade its debut 1990 and within ten years, the vocal act had experienced personal and political highs and lows that fueled the group's desire to make it big. Destiny's Childsold 33 million albums worldwide by 2002 and earned a slew of Grammys and additional music awards. "Jumpin' Jumpin'," "Bills, Bills, Bills," "Say My Name," and "Survivor" were smash hits, and the group appeared unstoppable.

In 2001, Knowles, Rowland, and Michelle Williamsallowed themselves a break from the singing group and tried their hands at individual solo careers. Before landing several movie roles,

Knowles became the first African-American female artist and second woman ever to win the annual ASCAP Pop Songwriter of the Year Award. An appearance in the MTV drama Carmen: A Hip Hoperaquickly followed, but it was her role as Foxxy Cleopatra in Austin Powers in Goldmemberin 2002 that eventually moved Knowles from the stage to the screen. Her first single, "Work It Out," coincided with the release of the Mike Myerscomedy and cemented Knowles' celebrity status. A guest spot on Jay-Z's "'03 Bonnie & Clyde" was equally popular when it appeared in October. In 2003, she shed her last name and rejoined Jay-Zfor her proper debut single, the funkadelic "Crazy in Love," as the press and fans christened her a bona fide star. Beyoncé Knowles' debut album, Dangerously in Love, which appeared in June 2003, featured collaborations with Sean Paul, Missy Elliott, and OutKast's Big Boi.

Dance-pop singer Jessica Simpson was born and raised in Dallas, TX, beginning her performing career as a member of her church choir; at 12, she also auditioned unsuccessfully for The Mickey Mouse Club. While attending church camp the following summer, Simpson was discovered by the head of a tiny CCM label, spending the next three years recording her debut album; the label folded before the record could be released, however, although a small pressing was eventually funded by her grandmother. The teen nevertheless became a hit on the Christian Youth Conference circuit, also sharing bills with Kirk Franklin, God's Property, and Ce Ce Winans; seeking to expand her popularity in the secular market, Simpson signed to Sony, touring in support of boy-band sensations 98°prior to releasing her 1999 major label debut Sweet Kisses, which launched the smash "I Wanna Love You Forever." A second studio effort, Irresistible, appeared in spring 2001. Despite the MTV coverage of the album's title track, Simpson's sophomore effort didn't fare as well as her first album. The following year, Simpson married her longtime boyfriend, 98°crooner Nick Lachey. She also went on to appear in several episodes of That 70s Show, but it took Simpson until summer 2003 to become a bona fide celebrity. She and Lachey's MTV-produced reality show, Newlyweds, captured countless moments of the couple's first year of marriage. Simpson's third album, the much more mature In This Skinappeared in July. First single "Sweetest Sin" was a moderate chart hit, but thanks to the success of Newlyweds, Simpson's teetering career got a second chance. Other marketing opportunities surfaced for the bubbly and ditzy Simpson, for she had become America's sweetheart. In This Skin's second single "With You" was a favorite among the MTV crowd and by spring 2004, In This Skinwas rereleased. It included reworked versions of Berlin's "Take My Breath Away" and Robbie Williams' "Angels" as well as additional footage from the first season of Newlyweds.

Kelly Rowland rose to fame with the success of Destiny's Childduring the late '90s. During that time, Destiny's Childcatapulted into the new millennium as one of the best-selling female musical groups in history. Rowland, who was barely in her twenties, had been imagining such stardom for a long time.

Born and raised in Atlanta, GA, Rowland began singing as soon as she heard the vocal beauty of Whitney Houston. She was only four at the time, but Houston's 1985 self-titled debut was enough to motivate the little girl. Performances with the church choir followed, but Rowland's developing interest in music blossomed when she and her family moved to Houston, TX. She befriended another inspiring singer, Beyoncé Knowles, and the two became fast friends. In the mid-'90s, the two girls formed Destiny's Child. Destiny's Childmade an impressive debut in 1997 with first single "No No No"; their self-titled full-length followed the next winter and went platinum before the year's end. Two more albums followed -- The Writing's on the Wall(1999) and Survivor(2001) -- earning Destiny's Childcountless fans across the globe as well as millions of records sold.

Upon the success of Survivor, Rowland followed her bandmates in taking some time off. During that time, Rowland began writing material for her first solo album. In 2002, Rowland's stylish R&B solo debut, Simply Deep, was released on Columbia. "Dilemma," the album's first single, featured a duet with southern rapper Nelly. It had a two-month stay at number one during fall 2002.

Nikki Cleary first found success with the 2001 novelty pop hit "I.M. Me," which was issued under her given name, Brittney Cleary. But when buzz surrounding that single generated label interest in the young singer, her eventual signing with Jive facilitated a name change. After all, the powerhouse pop label already had one Britney in its stable. Cleary's eponymous full-length debut appeared in August 2003. It was a clean-cut set of originals and peppy covers, and included a duet with Dream Street heartthrob Chris Trousdale on the Grease classic "You're the One That I Want." The record made some waves at Radio Disney, and Cleary supported it that autumn with a round of mini-concerts at malls and middle schools.
