Without a shadow of doubt the greatest pole vaulter of all time. Over a 10 year period Sergey Bubka broke the world record an incredible 17 times.

He was the first man over 6m and the only man to have ever cleared 6.10m. His current outdoor world record is 6.14m, his indoor world record is 6.15m.

He won an incredible six world championship golds, to this day the most won in one discipline.

Unbelievably, Bubka suffered from an incredible Olympic curse. In 1984, Russia boycott the (LA) games in response to the US boycotting the 1980 Olympics in Moscow. He won his only Olympic medal, gold, in the Seoul Olympics in 1988. In 1992, he failed his first three jumps, in 1996 he had to withdraw with an injury.

He was the highest pole vaulter in all four Olympic years, in fact between 1984 and 1997 he had the biggest jump in 12 of the 14 years.

Part of the greatest triple jump competition of all time. The world record was broken four times during the course of the Olympic final on the 17 October 1968, Mexico City. Including twice by Sanyeyev.

Three time Olympic champion from 1968 to 1976. Just failed to defend his title in his home Olympics in Moscow 1980 finishing with a silver medal. Still the most decorated triple jumper of all time.

Broke the world record for the third time four years to the day after that epic final with a jump of 17.44m which remained the record to 1975.

Current long jump world record holder. Part of an epic contest with with Carl Lewis in the 1991 Tokyo World Championships. Denied Carl Lewis, who had broken the 23 year old world record, with a jump of 8.91m, only to see Mike Powell leap into the history books with a jump of 8.95m.

Double world champion, but never won that elusive Olympic gold, finishing with two silver medals from two competitions.

One of the oldest records around and just to put it into context, the 2012 London Olympics was won with a jump of 8.31m.

Arguably the greatest track and field athlete of all time. Nine gold medals and one silver medal from four games. Including four successive long jump gold medals.

Part of an epic contest with with Mike Powell in the 1991 Tokyo World Championships. Denied the hattrick of medals from that competition.

Also an eight time world champion, with two long jump gold medals and a silver on that memorable night in Tokyo.

Former Olympic champion and current world record holder. Has held the record since 1988, but extended that in both 1989 and 1993 to 2.45m.

Would have likely won more medals but for Cuba's boycotting of the 1984 and 1988 Olympics, and injury denying him in 1996.

Unique in that he competed in the decathlon unlike the other members of this team. Which includes, the high jump, long jump and the pole vault.

One of only two men to win successive decathlon gold medals, at the 1984 and 1988 Olympics.

In the last 30 years the pole vault world record has been broken 19 times. Thierry Vigneron was able to break that record twice in that time. Unfortunately the second of those records was in a competition with the great Sergey Bubka.

Held the record at 5.91m in the 1984 Olympics, but had to settle for a bronze.
