Profile: A third-class citizen of the Tarak empire, Hibiki makes his living toiling away as a mechanic and inventory taker. However, he desires something more, and seeks to escape the low-respect life of a peon despite his co-workers' doubts. From the beginning this gets him into a bit of a bind when, he sneaks aboard the warship where the Vanguards, mechas he and the other third class citizens have been working on, are stored, in order to steal one. As soon as Hibiki locates the one he made a mark on one part of as he worked on it, and is about to take it when the ship launches. It's not long until he is discovered, and is imprisoned along with Cell unit 6. The ship is soon attacked, however, by none other than women! As most of the other men on the warship escape, Hibiki is taken as a prisoner. Because of his knowledge of the Vanguards, Hibiki ends up the sole Vanguard pilot on the Nirvana.

Despite Hibiki's outward appearance of acting tough and being rather crude to everyone he meets, Hibiki is in reality a pretty pathetic person, afraid of women and wanting to escape from his horrid life, but unable to do anything about it and constantly doubting himself. He almost gives up - but is spurred on by his unique situation and the fact that only he is able to pilot the modified Vanguard that survived the Nirvana's creation. To add to Hibiki's problems, he has to deal with fellow pilot Dita's constant hovering and curiousity, and at first, finds her geniunely annoying. However, in time, Hibiki begins to forge a kind of relationship not only with Dita, but with everyone on board the ship, something which changes him forever.

Profile: One of the Dread pilots, Dita's good reflexes and skill in combat compensate for her complete lack of attention span. She's obsessed with the idea of UFOs, the paranormal, and unfamiliar civilizations. On a raid of the men's battleship, Dita is separated from her team, and after losing control of her ship, runs into Hibiki. Because this is her first interaction with a man, she immediately declares the situation a "First Contact" occurrence, and deems Hibiki "Uchuujin-san" (Mr. Alien). Ever since this, Dita has been wanting to find out more about Hibiki, and continuously thinks about more ways to interact with him. While at first her actions are motivated by curiosity, it eventually awakens romantic feelings for Hibiki, despite her upbringing in an all-women society.

Dita's attitude is very lively and jovial. She's almost always in high spirits, and when she's down it's usually short-lived. Her mission in life seems to be to please people and make them happy, and for the most part she does so. There are times when morale is down among the crew, but Dita manages to cheer everyone up and get them moving again. Though Dita is not as intelligent as some of the other members of the crew (and could even be called ditzy at times), Dita feels that her cheerful attitude and her determination more than make up for it.

Profile: Commander of the Nirvana's Dread squadron, Meia is completely confident and businesslike-- consummate leadership material. She also happens to be very private, and is reluctant to rely on people or share her feelings with them. Nevertheless, Meia is strong-willed and kind; she may harrass Hibiki a lot, but she has more in common with him than she's ready to admit. Calm and collected during a battle, Meia never shows any emotion, and, at first, dislikes working with the men because it makes her feel weak and dependant on others.

There is a reason behind Meia's highly independant attitude. Meia lost her "Fama" mother when a planetary explosion occurred as a result of her "Ohma" mother's crooked involvement in environmental systems. As children were being evacuated, Meia's mother chose to stay. This loss, as well as the negative public opinion against her due to her association with her "Ohma", hardened Meia into believing that love only causes weakness and pain. Wandering the streets with no desire for life, Meia became nothing more than a thug - until Magno found her and told her that if she wanted to die so badly, that she should come join the Mejale pirates and choose the time for her to die.

Meia worked hard at her training, almost to the point of obsession, and eventually came to command the Dread squadrons. However, until she meets Hibiki and the other men, her unsociable and cold attitude is very persistent. While she is very skilled on her own, Meia has yet to learn that in order to win battles, she must rely on others to help her.

Profile: Jura is a member of the Dread squadron on the Nirvana, and is able to command squadrons in Meia's absence. Very aware of her own beauty, Jura is closest to what Mejale society seems to embrace - outward appearances and fierce competition to be and look the best. Consequently, she fixates on things of beauty, which makes her a nuisance to Hibiki when she decides that his Vanguard's fusion with the Nirvana's Dreads are very elegant and beautiful, and is determined to make her combination with Hibiki the best, in looks and in actions. Jura is also very concerned with doing things that no other woman has done in her society - most of them involving men in some form or another. Unfortunately for him, Hibiki appears to be Jura's intended way of achieving these things on more than one occasion.

Even though Jura acts very shallow and superficial, she is nevertheless able to help when the need arises, both in combat and in other situations. Even though she chases after Hibiki, she still maintains a close (even romantic) relationship with her fellow pilot, Barnette, and thinks more of her than anyone else, even Hibiki.

Profile: Magno is the captain and commander of the Nirvana and the pirates. Old and wise, Magno has been through much of the colonization's history and has become dissatisfied with the direction that the Mejale society has gone. Taking up other similarly minded women, Magno formed her pirates and began to make her living robbing both the Tarak and Mejale ships. On one such raid of the Tarak flagship Ikazuchi, Magno's ship is somehow fused with the Ikazuchi to form what is eventually called the Nirvana.

Magno's authority and wisdom is well-respected and known not only by her crew and friends, but also of her enemies as well. Nothing, however would seem to have prepared Magno's crew for the integration of men into their complement, a decision that Magno makes herself in the spirit of working together to get home.

Profile: Paiway, or Pai for short, is a doctor on board the Nirvana, although she becomes somewhat of an assistant for Duero when he gets on board. Paiway is energetic, but she is quite eccentric for a young girl, preferring to talk most of the time with her frog puppet, as well as be extremely curious about people's doings to the point of taking pictures of them. Her trademark "Pai Check" involves noting the more important parts of people's lives on the Nirvana, and their new situation with the men has given her more opportunity to "check" people.

Even though Paiway acts mature, there are times when she still acts like a small child. In times like this, she is able to rely on the rest of the crew for support, especially for Dita and Duero, who she considers herself close to. Despite her eccentricities, however, Paiway is a very effective doctor.

Profile: The Nirvana's Chief Engineer, Parfait is skilled with machinery and electronics, and maintains the ship's systems effectively. Never seen without her large, round spectacles, Parfet is inquisitive, intelligent, and sociable. She enjoys tinkering with Pyoro, and has even gone as far as forging a tenuous friendship with Duero Mcfile, the male doctor on board the ship - though her feelings could eventually be possibly considered as more than just platonic.

Parfait works to know more about the Nirvana's mysterious and sentient power source, the Paksis, and even though she doesn't participate in any actual fighting, she and the crew under her (similarly bespectacled) are a vital part of the Nirvana's well-being. She is also fascinated by any new mecha, and loves to find out about it. The modified Dreads and Vandreads are a perfect opportunity for Parfait to learn more about mechanics.

Profile: Bart is the helmsman of the Nirvana, and strangely enough, the only one who is able to move it. Though his skill at piloting the giant ship is miniscule at first, he eventually is able to control it with a fair amount of ease. Bart is generally very cowardly and unmanly, and tends to suggest running away from dangerous situations, especially in battle. His wimpy attitude and easily frazzled personality doesn't sit as well with the women on the ship. He also seems to have a crush on B.C., the sub-commander, although she seems to regard his feelings with relative indifference.

Bart is descended from a family responsible for putting out the "food" that is consumed in Tarak society - pills with varying colors. As such, he takes opportunities at times to use his heritage and knowledge of the pill industry to his own ends (usually ending in failure). While he is definitely not the ideal man, Bart eventually learns to show backbone in life-threatening situations for the sake of his friends and the Nirvana's mission to stop the Harvest fleet.

Profile: Gascogne Rheingau is one of the more colorful crewmembers of the Nirvana - in charge of the ship's weapons stockpiles and supplies department (Registration), she's loudmouthed, and a little crude. However, she is extremely friendly and she's always willing to listen to someone's problems. Her excellent management of the ship's supply depot keeps things running smoothly. Just remember not to call her "Gasco"- it's one of her pet peeves.

Gascogne is responsible for not only sending off the pilots with encouragement and supplies (her tagline for the department is "smile, smile"), but she also is able to take off in a heavily armored delivery supply ship to directly refuel the pilots in the middle of a firefight. Because of this, Gascogne considers her job one of a "stagehand", and is always calm, even in the worst of situations. As one of the first of Magno's pirates, she also holds a high position in the "senior" crew, helping Magno make the big decisions on board.

Profile: Pyoro is a NAVI robot, an antique model held over from the colonization era used for completing common tasks and guard duty. When Hibiki is captured after failing to steal a Vanguard unit, the men place Pyoro as a unit to guard his cell. But in the ensuing battle, Pyoro is knocked against the energy bars of the cell, and is subsequently broken forever.

After being "broken", Pyoro begins to take on a personality, very much unlike NAVI robots of his type. Becoming talkative, loud, and even angry at times, Pyoro becomes a member of the Nirvana crew, and is befriended by everyone, especially Parfait, who he works with in the maintenance of the ship. Even though his personaity was a mistake, Pyoro nevertheless becoems a vital part of the crew in later episodes, especially after it is discovered that he is able to interface with the mysterious Paksis power source of the Nirvana.

Profile: A first-class citizen and a medical doctor, Duero is every bit as intelligent as he looks. He's a versatile man who freely and effectively applies his knowledge of medical technology and concepts to his duties on the Nirvana, which also include helping out in Engineering when he's needed. Surprisingly, Duero is also kind and considerate, and quickly wins Parfet's friendship, though eventually one could consider his feelings for her to be somewhat more than platonic. A fairly quiet guy, he is also very observant of what is going on.

Duero's somewhat analytical personality helps in most situations, but when it comes to the women, as well as their unique enemy, Duero finds that his education isn't the only thing that can help solve a difficult problem. However, to his credit, Duero has an open mind and is always looking for the next "interesting" or intriguing thing, and communicates that to his fellow crewmates.
