The 15th-century king ruled Wallachia (part of present-day Romania), and from him comes the word Dracula. It’s a translation of his name, Vlad Tepes, which inspired the idea of Count Dracula in Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel “Dracula.” Vlad was known for his many methods of torturing and killing his enemies. He is said to have impaled at least 80,000 victims on long stakes. Death was slow, and the bodies of victims were left to rot for months.
