He also had the support to back that claim, with most of his house and several others rallying to his cause. Stannis however, had different plans; using his advisor, the "Red Woman", they crafted a spell that sent a shadow to kill his brother, stabbing him in the heart.

Oberyn Martell was a skilled assassin, who's driving force was avenging the death of his sister and her children at the hands of a madman. When he was given the opportunity to confront the man, he succeeded in besting him in combat. Unfortunately in his insolence from this victory, he insisted on a confession before the man died, and was subsequently tripped, knocked out, and had his skull crushed before his opponent succumbed to his wounds.

Pretty gnarly. Some women probably screamed.
