Wilhelm Wegener was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross in June 1943 for his actions near Scherustow and Iskrowka, during the counterattack at Kharkov in March of that year. At this point, a platoon leader in the First Battery, he displayed great personal initiative in retaking both these villages, inflicting the loss of three 122mm howitzers, a 76 mm gun, and two 47mm anti-tank guns, after the lead StuG in the battery was destroyed.

Fighting on to Alexandrowka, he accounted for four enemy tanks, two 122mm guns, eight 76 mm guns, and six 47mm anti-tank guns. Still later, at Stanowje, when the GD StuG unit ran into heavy Soviet resistance, twelve tanks were personally destroyed by Wegener and his crew. Fighting to the last shell, Wegener hurried to the rear, rearmed and refuelled, and then returned to take on forty more enemy tanks, fighting them until relieved by Tiger tanks in the evening.

A German commando leader and best known for his daring rescue of Mussolini from the peak of the Gran Sasso in the Abruzzi in September 1943, Skorzeny also kidnapped the son of the Hungarian dictator, Horthy, in 1944, thus nullifying the father's plans to make a separate peace with the Russians.

In December 1944 as part of the Ardennes offensive, he led a force of English-speaking Germans into American lines where they spread confusion and destruction. He was the most successful German irregular soldier of the war.

Rudel's war record is simply amazing in any scale. Like some other great war heroes, he had a very late start. He began the war as a reconnaissance pilot and was training to convert to a dive bomber pilot during the invasion of France. His warrior career finally began with the invasion of Russia in june 1941, and he served in the russian front until the end of the war, except for short periods in germany as instructor and test pilot.

In the next four years he flew a total of 2530 combat sorties in which he destroyed 519 russian tanks, 150 artillery guns, 1000 vehicles, a battleship, two cruisers, a destroyer, 70 landing craft, and also shot down 11 aircraft. He was shot down 30 times, lost a leg, which didn't stop him at all, and performed numerous acts of sacrifice and heroism. Rudel had the rare combination of great warrior skills and tons of luck, and years of intense daily fighting to fully exploit them, which is how he reached such an amazing record for which he became the highest decorated german war hero.

During his many campaigns both on the Eastern front and in the West, Wittmann was to make a name for himself with his exceptional skill and bravery, and was highly respected both by friend and foe alike. His exploits during the Normandy campaign of 1944 in particular were to elevate him to the status of a legend.

Perhaps his greatest fame was gained in a single action in Normandy where the famous commander destroyed an entire column of 25 tanks, 14 half-tracks and 14 bren-gun carriers in a few short minutes with one Tiger.

Walter Nowotny was a fighter pilot in the German Luftwaffe during World War II. He scored 255 victories (mostly on the Eastern Front) and received the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds, one of the Third Reich's highest decorations for bravery.

In the fall of 1944 Nowotny was put in charge of Kommando Nowotny, the first squadron of Me-262 jet fighters, and died when his jet crashed near Achmer on November 8, 1944. Only a few parts of his body could be recovered from the wreck and he had to be identified by his Knight's Cross.

Wolfgang Schnaufer may have been the highest scoring night fighter pilot, but Helmut Lent is the name most often mentioned in these operations during the conflict. A master tactician and a brilliant leader of men, his loss was one in which the corps would never recover from. If Werner Molders was the archetype day pilot, then Lent ruled the night sky. 110 Victories in 300 Missions, first Night Fighter pilot to reach 100 Victories and be awarded the Diamonds.
