An American looking for an EPL team to root for.
So, I manage to wake up early enough on Easter Morning. I don't have to work today, so I'm thrilled that I'm up early enough to get to watch some English Premiere League!

I LOVE English football, but haven't been following it for very long; maybe a total of a year. As an American, I've missed out on a lot of the history of many of the clubs. I've decided that I want to find a team to root for, but I don't want to pick "my team" until I've had at least one experience with each club.

It's also difficult for me to get to watch more than 1 match per week. I'm at the mercy of my cable provider and their scheduling/channels. Working 6 days a week doesn't lend itself to an ease of a live broadcast, like it did this morning. With that, I'd like to tell you a bit of a story.

I got to watch the Spurs play against Burnley this morning. Not one of the most exciting matches I've seen, but it still had a few good opportunities. It was not the first time I had seen Tottenham, but it WAS my first experience with Burnley. As the players are jogging around, I catch a fast glimpse of the front of a Burnley uniform. I had to do a double take.

"Did that just say FUMBBL?" I said aloud to my wife, who was completely uninterested in the match.

A few minutes go by. I keep seeing just a quick shot of a uniform. Nothing straight on. I don't know why it really didn't occur to me at the time, but I kept thinking "Are they wearing FUMBBL uniforms?"

Finally, a shot of the Burnley bench appears, and there's the BOYS logo, as well as "FUN88"

I was a bit disappointed, and felt a bit... well, childish.

It was a good laugh for me this morning, and made me want to donate more money to FUMBBL, thinking we could be sponsoring an EPL team.

So, now that I've told you my funny story of the morning, what EPL team do you root for, and why?
I haven't learned all the derbys, the back history, and the likes yet, but I'm still looking for "my team".

Now, I get to watch Sunderland (whom I've seen before) and Newcastle (I've yet to see them) in 10 minutes!
Help me find a team!

Well, guess I'll chime in as a Brit!

I personally support Wolverhampton Wanderers as my team team, because I'm from Wolverhampton and my grandad would spin in his grave if I didn't. However, we haven't been in the premier league for a few years now :P

Otherwise, for premier league teams I tend to go with either Liverpool or Arsenal, Liverpool because they play great football, and Arsenal because they have Mesut özil, who is the absolute bomb and a pleasure to watch. Hope this helps!

I'm a Liverpool fan. My Dad's whole family are from there and the surrounding area. When my Dad found out my uncle on my mums side was taking all the kids to see Tottenham, he took me to Anfield to see Liverpool the week before to make sure my first match was a Liverpool match. I was 3 years old :D

Ever since my dad came home with the JVC emblemed Arsenal jersey he picked up on a business trip I've been a Gunners fan. Also it has Arse in it, something that suits me.

Tottenham if you want to support a team that always goes for attractive attacking football. Even if it means defense is shite. We'd rather lose 4-3 than win 1-0. Today was very uncharacteristic, but the current coach has to work with a bunch of players someone else bought for a different system, so it's a weird season. But we did beat Chelsea 5-3. PS: what your dad did was criminal! akaRenton ;)

You cant go wrong with any of the giants: chelsea, united, city, arsenal or liverpool
2nd tier (as 'special' clubs, not necessarily good performance this season): everton, spurs, villa, newcastle and maybe sunderland.
Non premier league: (dirty) Leeds and Nottingham Forrest (only english team to win the euro 'champions' cup in back to back seasons even though they have just one league championship - they won the second euro as holders not as league champions)

Fact check!
Cant edit so a new comment.
Liverpool has also won back to back euro cups (right before NF)

Lol at 'uniform'
Call 'em strips
Go with the Underdog. support Leicester City, see if they can hang on and not get relegated

Ignore Sunderland and Newcastle and support Middlesbrough. Clearly the best northeast team and will be back in the Premiership next year.

Also join OBBA. The bestest league on fumbbl and based around English football (and American soccer too).

"You cant go wrong with any of the giants: chelsea, united, city, arsenal or liverpool"

Oh good grief! The last thing we need is another glory boy. ;)

But definitely don't pick Spurs. ;)

As much as I don't really claim to be a ManU fan, I can't help but root for Rooney when I watch him play. Damn if he just isn't the epitome of a Captain on the field. But as to who to root *for*... you can't go wrong rooting against Chelsea.

yeah, Chelski are easy to hate -- such lovable goons, not.

Man U and Liverpool are the old artistocracy - both fallen a little of late, but great history.

Man City can FRO.

Arsenal are ok, but you will get used to "not quite" winning things. Tottenham are in this category too, altho even less "not quite".

Then you have yr mid table West Ham, Southampton, Newcastle, Everton set. Long time EPL teams, good histories, not likely to get yr expectations up too much.

You also have your "Northern Grit" teams, Sunderland, Stoke - no real talent, low budget, work hard and over achieve.

Go the Irons!

Or if you are really rowdy root for Millwall...
Posted by koadah on 2015-04-06 11:32:05
Damn! This is a sad thread.

Are we really saying that if you don't pick a team from Cdassak's list of giants you will probably never see your team be champions? Even if you live to be a very old man?

"'61 never again! '61 never again!"

Even the Raiders have won the superbowl since then!

Edit: Raiders will probably be champs again before it happens a second time. ;)

Charlton Athletic.

Bugger the fancy dans and champagne charlies. Besides, you want to be one of the cool kids, don't you?
Posted by licker on 2015-04-06 15:14:40
Of course the NFL is superior in that they attempt to enforce parity through salary caps and salary floors.

The better comparison would be to MLB, as those clubs are allowed to operate in a fashion more similar to sissykick.

Charlton did you say?

http://www.cafc.co.uk/tickets/season-tickets/

Stone the crows. A season ticket for less than the price of three of the cheapest category A seats. My kids will soon no longer be eligible for Junior memberships. I'll maybe talk to them about defecting. It's bit of a trek though. ;)

Maybe we'll see what the Irons are charging when they go Olympic.

But if the Spuds can't fill 56,000 seats it might be worth getting a membership there to cheer the opposition.

I'd say something snarky about the obvious inherent failures of the EPL, but I really lack any moral high ground from which to mount an offensive.

The Dutch league has less money in it, money is the root of all evil, so you get to watch suckier players accomplish less, with less teams and less talent... Yeah, totally off the rails... ;)

A possibly pointless suggestion: try to DVR the matches you can't watch live. Allows you to catch em when you want, pause when you want, and not bother the wife (when you want).
(I rather doubt you don't have a DVR with your cable package, hence the probable futility of this)

FORZA OBBA!

Oh we'll fill it alright. Another reason for you to support Spurs is that we have the by far youngest team among the top sides of the top leagues in Europe. Will the City starting 11 is an average of 29.2 years old, the Spurs are only 23.5, which means this is the time to invest in Spurs and get in on the floor Apojar!
Posted by koadah on 2015-04-07 18:23:54
They're very young and some are very good. When they are sold the shareholders will get a nice dividend. They won't win a Championship.

Maybe a cup if you are lucky. If the year ends in a 1. that's another 6 years. ;)

So, basically it has to be a London team.

You get loads of natural rivalries, loads of derbies, loads of banter.

And if you ever come to England to watch a game you won't be stuck in the back of beyond with nothing but flat caps and whippets to look at. ;)
