Well, I have a higher Coach Rating than Flix. :)
Maybe you are not cynical enough. ;)

I generally ignore CR now as it just shows if someone is on a hot streak or not. I've seen coaches that were in the 170's before the change at 150-155 now. Win % is what I check nowadays.

Yes
Hey he was asking for a yes or no answer...dont get mad at me for telling him like it is...he seems to like cut and dry snswers with no BS.
I just hope my CR cliff dive I have going on will not influence if he takes my answer to heart.

Probably.
Most guys I know are.

don't be honest on fumbbl, the majority of the coaches are far too emo to handle it
Posted by Jeffro on 2011-12-29 00:49:19
You're a bad person. A bad, bad person. Quit eating puppies and take every bit of advice from whoever gives it.
Posted by Jeffro on 2011-12-29 00:49:37
Really. Put down the puppy.
Posted by Jeffro on 2011-12-29 00:50:05
Now. Before you regret it.

If you ask for advice and somebody gives it, I think you should be grateful. I give lots of advice, do you look at my CR? If so, I won't give it to you again.
Oh and change the title of this blog.

if you have to ask, know the answer is always 'yes'
saying that, i will now go read your blog.

If we're basing things off of performance on the FUMBBL website (I'm assuming, since coach rating is listed here), then I have to take issue with you classifying yourself as a 'vet'.
I don't even consider myself a vet especially, and I have over 1000 matches played here in addition to the numerous ones on tabletop and in tournies. There are players on this site who have over 1000 matches with A SINGLE TEAM.
To hear that you're discounting people's opinions having played less than 200 matches yourself is sad. You have some experience, which is good. Use that experience to sort the good advice from the bad - not coach rating. Someone with only 3 games under their belt might have a flash of inspiration that changes everything for all of us...
... and I'm out.

Yes. But it doesn't mean you're wrong ;)
Posted by BillBrasky on 2011-12-29 08:27:03
I think you already know the answer to this one ;)
But seriously. Always take advice with a grain of salt.
Some things work for others that won't work with you.
If you've played enough, you should develop your own style.
Don't worry what others say or think.

I know coaches with a win ratio in teh 20's and 30;s but are still good coaches.
They play crazy teams in closed leagues and this affects the visual appearence of their performance stats, but does not capture their knowledge of the game

If you know nothing about the coach, sure, might as well. You need some kind of measuring stick to gauge people's advice. Preferably the advice itself will have some kind of intrinsic value by which to judge it, but if it does not, look at their CR, their records with certain teams and what kind of opposition they have been facing. Maybe look at the amount of official tournies (like smacks and the like) they have won.
Always question free advice, but don't ever just discount it either. Preferably use more than their CR to go by, but if that's all you have, then by all means.
PS. Occassionally someone will be "passively" good at the game, in which they have not actively analyzed their success, and they may even come to wrong conclussions about what makes them good/successful. Success does not equal insight, nor does lack of success mean lack of insight - perhaps you are terrible at implementing theory into practice. Of course, these are no-names over the internet. As said previously, use the tools at your disposal. Hopefully that tool is more accurate than just CR, but CR can be a good indicator.
PPS. You are probably neither a bad person or cynic vet for using CR, you are however being lazy in your assessment of others ;)

If you are that nice of a person, that you have to ask about this, my answer is no. I am sure most of us did way worse things.
CR is one of the things I look at, when considering advice, though as several has stated already, it is a flawed instrument at best.
Posted by pythrr on 2011-12-29 10:37:27
this is easily solved
just listen to me. my advice is golden.
Posted by Garion on 2011-12-29 10:45:39
CR is worthless, many people play substandard races more than any other and have a bad CR as a result even though they are amongst the best coaches on site. If you want to judge you would be better off just looking at the number of games played really.
Posted by koadah on 2011-12-29 11:34:38
Christer might disagree with worthless.

Some people can play a lot a lot of games and still not be any good. Some are pretty good before the even arrive at Fumbbl.
