try to start with all 4 BoBs. They take ages to skill, so you want them going from the start.

No they don't.

regarding the rules:
you need
"m780049a_Blood_Bowl_Competition_Rules.pdf "- the competition rules.
be careful as there is an older version m75..... .... .pdf around
for orcs, have a look at the tactics and strategy part of the fumbbl help section too. its gonna change a little with the new rules, but you should find solid advice there.

High fanfactor is completely unnecessary for a starting team with the new rules. I'd very strongly suggest going with the full 4 BoBs and 4 Blitzers, 1 thrower, 2 lineorcs, 3 RRs and 1 FF.

I agree with Backelie. If you are new to Blood Bowl then forget LRB4. Play FFB/CRP and start with the low FF.
You can start with 0 FF to increase your chances of getting an apoth after game 1.
Front load the team with the 4 BOBs & 4 Blitzers. That is a decent team from the word go.

I agree with koadah and blackelie. The new ruleset changed the way fan factor works and you don't need to buy a large amount of it anymore. So start with 4 black orcs, 4 blitzers, 2 linemen and 1 thrower, 3 rerolls and 10k in the bank. You should then buy an apothecary as soon as possible.

WOW - awesome feedback guys (gals?), thanks!
@ Reisender:
Thanks for the update on the rules; I now know that I have the correct set (and the older one too I think), and I was sure to rename it 'competition rules.'
As far as the Orc Tactics section at FUMBBL - that's what I've been reading and -ultimately- how I came up with my lineup.
@ backelie, koadah, and Ancre:
Thanks for all of the advice! Someone commented on my previous blog post saying the same thing about FF, so I'm going to try to edit my team... or delete my team and rebuild w/less FF.
Ultimately, I'm going to go with koadah's suggestion at starting w/zero FF in hopes that I can get closer to an apothecary.
Cheers :)
