Welcome... enjoy! :)
I'll get my cursory advice out of the way for new players... spec games. You meet people watching those games (especially big tournament games) and can see good coaching tactics and endless speculation about what to do. Fun times and pie.

Getting used to the program before playing your first game helps. You can select "stand alone" mode, which makes you play against yourself.

http://fumbbl.com/FUMBBL.php?page=lfg go there and put your team in gamefinder. Log in to irc channel and see who else is looking for a game. Then ask if he will go against you. Enjoy your time here!
