Given that I live in New England where it was 45F yesterday (7C) on the first day of February, I think the Groundhog thing is pretty moot this year. It's been spring for weeks already.

7C ... well, germany had -13C this morning, and yesterday I was in Kiev where we had -26C ... so there IS winter out there, even tho prolly not in New England. ;-)

Wouldn't you have to source some sort of local vermin to predict German weather? I can't see how a groundhog in the middle of Pennsylvania can do much predicting 6 times zones away.
Setup: designate a particular German critter as your official weather-critter. On Feb 2, drag it out of its dwelling, surrounded by crowds of people and cameras. If it gets spooked and wants to go back in, declare that winter will last until roughly the vernal equinox.
