For their last encounter this season, the Meddlers faced Cuatholomec's Devout Hoppers, a collection of froglike humanoids whose main trick is leaping around like madmen. Timaris Stormwing, the Meddlers' head coach, was impressed by the mercenaries and wizards the opposition had recruited. "Looks more like an army than a team though", Mereia, the Meddlers' assistant-coach, observed when the Hoppers marched onto the field and began positioning themselves. "Not to worry", she concluded, adjusting her dark shades slightly, "they lack coordination and routine".
Meanwhile the game had started with the Hoppers receiving. The riotous crowd decided to invade the pitch at the start of the game, trampling some frogmen and a few elves into the turf. Before anyone realized what was going on, the Meddlers had moved forward, effectively cutting the Hoppers' squad in half. The ballcarrier ran towards the sideline for safety, but Hauclir blocked the road and Morlanna leaped in to surf the unfortunate frogman. The tumultuous crowd threw the ball back in, right into the hands of a flabbergasted Slibli! The saurus ran away with the ball, but the faster elves dodged free, surrounded him and kicked the ball loose. It would take a few turns to cross the field before the Meddlers ran in the first touchdown of the evening in turn 7: 0-1. The remaining turn didn't change anything anymore.
The second half started with the Meddlers receiving. Wary about the wizard, Timaris urged his team forward, pushing them to score quickly. The Hoppers, unable to cover all elves sneaking through their defenses, tried but failed at stopping the elves. In turn 2 Hauclir passed to Finavar who scored the Meddler's second touchdown: 0-2. "Kurnous is with us tonight", Timaris smiled with satisfaction. "He's certainly not against us", Mereia countered. "But I doubt we really need his support tonight", she continued.
Meanwhile the game had resumed once more. When the Hoppers failed a leap to punch a hole in the Meddlers' defences, Hauclir got an opportunity to free the ball and steal it. "What a wonderful player", Timaris exclaimed. "A true star in the making", he continued when he noticed Mereia didn't react. Suddenly a zapping sound resounded throughout the stadium. Unbelief filled Timaris' eyes when he noticed the opposition had called in its hired wizard who had turned Hauclir into a toad! "Where's your true star now?", Mereia asked her head coach sarcastically. "Looks like he's joined the Hoppers", she continued. Back on the field the elves' confusion was finally broken by Nimrodel's initiative to ignore everything else, run for the ball and score. When he tripped on the endline and fractured his skull, Timaris sent in the apothecary to patch up the unfortunate catcher. "Looks like Kurnous has abandoned us too", Mereia concluded when she noticed a slight twist appearing in the corner of Timaris' mouth.
On the field the Meddlers had won back their confidence after the mayhem of the past few turns. The ball was still there for the taking, after the Hoppers had failed a pass. Finavar kept his head cool, picked it up and ran in his second touchdown of the game: 0-3. The few turns remaining didn't change anything anymore.
Fifth consecutive win for the Meddlers who finish the summer season with a 5/0/0 record!”
