The Anchorage Eskimos met with coach Zanth's Chukicool at a neutral site today, the Elven-Brew SuperCenter in East Delta. The venue isn't affiliated with any league, but hosts competitive exhibition matches between independent teams and pulls in lots of concession revenue all the while.
This was the Eskimos' first big-arena match, and the excitement was felt all through the locker room and onto the pitch. Coming out of a 1-1 draw against the Amazonian paisegas con plumas ii, the humans felt able to handle whatever horrors coach Zanth could face them with.
But attitudes quickly shifted when, in a first-half backfield struggle for the Eskimos, #1 Werewolf Nathaniel Goman slashed savagely at #12 Lineman Eardwulf Martinovic. Martinovic struck the ground in an unnatural position, and lay still. The Anchorage medical crew charged the field to secure the injured player, as the now-caged ghoul Kinsley Lull looked Linnae Hammons in the eye, a lone defender.
Amphetamines and some black magic got Martinovic's system working again, and he returned to the pitch to great cheers in the second half. But the scent of blood in the air enlivened the terrors led by the stone-faced coach Zanth. The Chukicool gang went on a half-long tear, leaving only 5 of the Eskimos on the field by the end of the drive.
The Eskimos were able, however, to KO #2 Werewolf Audrey Melatus during the last kickoff of the first half, renewing some hope for a tying drive. And perhaps even better, all of the Eskimos' KO'd players woke up to start the second half. Perhaps it was the thunderous energy of such an arena that got them to their feet and let adrenaline do the work.
Unfortunately, the second half did not bring the fruits that Anchorage fans had been hoping for. In a moment far too ballsy for the situation, Coach fivehead ordered his squad of blitzers down the field, presumably to try and remove the Horrors' more agile positionals. But this had more adverse effects than anticipated. Despite great efforts from skilled blitzers like Jozafat Gupta and Didi Casal, this only congested Chukicool's backfield, and left little opportunity for a scoring lane as the ball-carrying battalion plowed through the line of scrimmage.
The drive quickly melted into desperation, and an almost-spectacular Alcantra-Gupta pass landed just short, sealing this one as a loss for fivehead and the Eskimos.
After quite a savage battle, the guys were thankful to leave the pitch relatively unscathed, with a nice SuperCenter paycheck under their belts as well. ”
