The H.M.S. Surprise is the favorite command of Captain Jack Aubrey in the 'Aubrey-Maturin' historical novels by Patrick O'Brian. Set during the Napoleonic Wars, she is a 28 gun 12lb frigate that takes Jack and his crew through many adventures. I highly recomment the 20 novel series to anyone who has a sense of history or a love of the sea. Sadly, O'Brian passed away recently, so there will be no more. The recent movie "Master and Commander" starring Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany is a fairly good screen adaptation of the series. Rent the movie, then if you are intrigued, get the first book, "Post Captain." |
