They're wicketkeepers, I'm confused

Pre-WIL:
Adam Gilchrist found himself with little to do following his retirement from first-class cricket. Sure there was the IPL for six weeks a year but the rest of the time he was just twiddling his thumbs and absent mindedly smashing apples over fences. Eventually, he ran out of apples and decided something must be done. Through a series of lucrative deals, youth potions and in some cases necromancy, he established the greatest team ever to be made purely out of wicketkeepers. Then, for no reason, they chose to play bloodbowl instead of like, cricket or something they might be good at.

Season XVII: Fringin'
The Wicketkeepers found they had joined the fringe just in time to stand up to a barrage of bouncers bowled by Khemri in the first round of the Fringe Cup, the majority of which caused outs by retirement. Fortunately the contrite keepers were given a second chance the next over and took a series of routine catches off damaged Vampires to progress to the final of the Fringe Plate. A berserk goblin was all that stood between them and glorious sort-of success but the Wicketkeepers were eliminated in a one-over eliminator after tying the final in normal time.

Still, the scouts judged them ready to be thrown into the regionals and Gilchrist swore to avenge the (first of many) deaths of Alec Stewart, eaten by a troll in his prime.

Season XVIII: It ain't over until the amount of overs allotted for the day have been bowled
The Wicketkeepers felt somewhat intimidated by the clearly not pansy cricketers arrayed against them. Two heavy defeats followed, the Subatomic lizards winning by nine wickets and then the Hocham humans actually inflicting an innings defeat. The only shining lights were Gilchrist who was beginning to enjoy beating people to death with his bat, and a clearly steroid-fuelled Ian Healy. Fortunately this proved a turning point, with the Wicketkeepers managing to bat out a draw and following that with two actual, bonafide wins. Mark Boucher finally woke up, taking a string of stunning catches while complaining about the cold and somehow the Wicketkeepers had achieved promotion at the first attempt.

Season XIX: Getting a start
The Wicketkeepers once again started poorly, though their defeats this time round were a lot closer now that Gilchrist had instilled some steel in the team spirit. In their first two games they just couldn't keep up with the runrate, and in the third they batted out a creditable draw with a strong lizard team, but they still weren't really picking up the rankings points they needed. The watershed came shortly after, a horrible game against the dorfs of Barak Miners saw Gilchrist smashed in the face with a wicked beamer, and Sangakkara heavily injured. The wicketkeepers resolved they had to play better, and went about it, winning the next two games in commanding displays, a re-animated Gilchrist no longer the focal point for the team. With leaders all around the pitch, the Wicketkeepers emerged stronger than they were at the start of the season, especially Sangakkara. They would be in the conference for another year.

Season XX: Batting Powerplay
The Wicketkeepers found themselves in a strong conference this time around, and in little better shape than they'd started the previous season. They were apprehensive, but felt that finally enough useful abilities had been shared around that they could make a proper go of it. A fireball-affected draw with QPR C-Dorfs was followed by an exciting last-ball run-chase over the Oxfordshire skaven, temporarily placing them at the top of the table. It wasn't to last though, with three straight defeats with two draws possible but spurned. An injury-hit Coldeyeshire Undead team was steamrolled by an innings, Sangakkara getting a triple-ton, but the final game of the season was against the toughest dorfs of all, that we'd lost to last year. The wicketkeepers gave their all but couldn't breach the iron forward defensive of their opponents and slipped to another defeat. With three to be relegated they'd finished up third from bottom and their fate was in the hands of the MCC.
