Winners of The Bare Bones Tourney. Positional Points "Earned": 5
Positional Points Spent: 5 Week One Week number one ended with everyone getting in 3-4 games (except for poor flyingboxers who was running late and only got in two) which means the point spread and TRs are staying pretty close. I managed to sneak away with a 2/1/0 record and ended up second thanks to some brutal block dice. Masterwizkid's currently in the lead with a slim 4 point lead after his fourth game. The handicapping mechanism looks to be working and next week's games should be even tougher. After playing my third game against Falcone's necros with just one positional player, I think I'm going to have a rough couple of games coming up. Fortunately the one tie (which I really deserved to lose after blowing a huge chance on my stupidest move in a long time) I have a blitz-ra, at least. We'll see how much help he is when I'm coming up against teams with multiple vamps, wights, ghouls, wolves, etc... Week Two Second week and my ranking plummeted. I showed up late and as such I only got two games in. The first of which was an absolutely brutal loss to GorTeX and his Khemri. With 2 mummies against my skellies +1 Blitz-ra (who accomplished exactly nothing, got a MNG and the MVP... Lousy debutantes....) I got beat down bad. I scored 2 BH and that was it. I blew my final shot at a TD to at least rack up a few points. The second game against MasterWizkid looked like a tough one. He has lead both weeks so far and this time I was nowhere in his league. Somehow, things came up golden for me and after trading scores in the first half, I managed to sneak in on turn 8 of the second for the win... after almost sneaking in on turn 4, losing it, getting it back, losing it again and finally making it. It was ugly. The entire second half could have gone either way. Fortunately I started breaking armor like nobody's business and, while I got no real volume of KOs or CAS, Half the turns he found a majority of his team stunned, it seemed. Meanwhile I was getting whittled down by KOs and CAS and it got really close at the end. So, week 2 ends with me in 5th place... behind Celas, Slappy, GorTex and MasterWizkid... although they all have more games in than me, so I still have a shot, however tenuous. Celas only has 1 less game to play, but he's 24 points up on me... which means I need some high-scoring games to catch up. We'll see the week after V-Day. Week Three Week 3 was pretty good for me, although celas is now pretty much officially out of reach. Unless he loses badly to neander (or doesn't get to play him) AND I manage a ridiculously huge win, it looks like I'm in second again. Always a bridesmaid, never a bride... My three matches this week were generally pretty fortunate affairs. The first game against flyingboxers went well and I pulled out a 2-1 win there. Then Caileanhawk smacked me down good for a 1-2 loss. I had a slim chance to pull off a tie at the end of the game, but I blew that with a foolish risk or two. Finally a big match against SirSlappy's nasty vamps. I thought it was all over when he SI'd both of my mummies at the end of the first half, but some lucky KO rolls kept his team undermanned and I still managed to pull ahead and sneak by with the win. Of course, now (assuming I don't play neander), I'll be starting the KO with both of my mummies MNG. That bodes poorly, to say the least. We'll see if I make it to the second round and get a chance to bring them back into play. Week Four Well, the KO got underway and things went a little more slowly than anticipated, so celas and I still have to play the final some time this week. My first match was, fortunately, against Falcone - who had lost all his positional players and was down to nothing but zombies. This was ok, because it was still a good close match. Both my mummies were still MNG from Slappy's vamps, so it was 12 zombies vs. 12 skellies and a Blitz-ra. I ended up walking away with a 3-0 win, but each one of those drives involved both of us touching the ball and could have gone either way. It was way closer than the score. Next came the big one. MasterWizKid's Undead. We swapped scores in each half and eventually threw the game into OT. Then we swapped scores again. It came down to a coin toss. That's how close it was. MWK was playing really aggressively and it was paying off... I just stayed close thanks to a few really lucky plays to end the 2nd half and the last turn of OT. That puts me against Celas in the final round for the big prize. I've beat him once in the RR... all I need is a repeat performance, right? Heh. The Finals Damn. Just... damn. I managed to take Celas in the final in a truly ugly game. I haven't seen anyone roll that badly in ages. It was like playing against Trog again... And that's saying something. I ended up KOing the Blodge, Pro vampire for the last 11 turns of the game or so, injuring the other one twice (regened), killing several thralls (one apothed) and just generally trashing his entire team. It was just unbelievable. As with before, his wizard did little (stunned the ballcarrier and missed 2 other skellies, making that Wizard 1 vs Skeletons 6) and there was just no stopping dice like that. Why didn't I go play craps tonight? I woulda won a fortune.
|
