The revolution and war of liberation left indelible marks on the people of the Carpathian basin. At the time it's fame spread around the "Western" world, igniting demonstrations -even revolts. It also caused anxiety among the autocratic rulers still in power, while in England (a constitutional monarchy) and the USA the press, speakers, sympathized. When Kossuth visited these two countries (1851-52) he received the warmest welcome from the "grassroots", most of the press and- in case of the USA- the government. The British cabinet- though individually supportive- was more cautious in its reactions, lest it alienate Austria, considered a counterbalance to Tsarist ambitions.

The war was- of course- costly, but not as much as believed at first. . Financials were within authorized budgets. Noteworthy were the Russian losses: some 500 in battle and 11000 to disease (mostly cholera). The bloody retribution: executions, jail sentences, despotic decrees, have only served to unify Hungarians in their search for freedom.

Arad execution (right)*
The controversy was not limited to the international scene.. Within Hungary the events left alegacy of impressions: of people, of ideals. Some became heroes, others villains- and a fewremained controversial. Foremost among the latter was Gen. Görgey. Kossuth had a love/hate(and variable) relationship with him: concerned about his politics, but admiring his military skills. The surrender at Világos became a rallying point of the the anti-Görgey movement. Could the revolution survive if he had not surrendered ? Was he too friendly with the Russians, (esp.Paskievich) ? Could he have extracted more favorable terms (like Klapka at Komárom) ?

The repression that followed created increased yearning for the unachieved goals, yet a few of these were adopted even by the ruling despots: liberation of the serfs, equality before the law.

There had been many hypotheses: What if ....

- Görgey had not surrendered at Világos ?

- The Honvéd had joined the Vienna revolutionaries after the battle of Pákozd ?

- in the Spring of 1948 the government and Diet had acceeded to the nationalities' demands and permitted local cultural autonomies instead of waiting until July 1849 ? Could their support turn the tide ?

-How "Hungarian" was the war ? Consider that among the leaders were Gen.Bem (Poland), Karoly Knezich (a Croat and Arad Martyr), Leiningen-Westerburg (German- Arad martyr). A noted leader was Gen. Richard Guyon (British; see link to Richard Guyon) Less well known were the thousands of "foreign" Honvéd from Poland, from Italy, from Germany etc. Their homelands were also yearning to freedom from absolutist rulers. By the same token not all Hungarians supported the war. Some nobles resented loss of privileges; others just thought the cause was lost, esp. after the battle of Schwechat.

Kossuth- the charismatic leader- had gone into exile for the rest of his life (Died in Turin, Italy-1894)There he modified some of his views, such as advocating a "Danube basin" federal government, including- but not limited to- Hungary's "nationalities". If his plan had been adopted, would there have been a WWI (and Trianon) ? He never did approve of the 1867 compromise with the Habsburgs ( establishing the Dual Monarchy). The events have produced fame and (in some cases) notoriety for a number of personalities. Lajos Kossuth's name became synonymous with freedom and democracy. There is hardly a Hungarian town without a "Kossuth Street" (or square) and most display statue(s) of that famed statesman.

Whatever the hypotheses, the events of 1848-49 had left a permanent mark on Hungarians andsome of Hungary's neighbors. History has a way of reemerging many years later.

56 Honvéd flags and standards surrendered to the Russians (primarily at Világos)were returned from Moscow to Hungary on March 20 1941, only to be "reexported" in the aftermath of World War IIIn 1948 they were again brought back to Budapest (along with some othermementoes) and are now on display in the Military History (Hadtörténeti) museum.
