The Sphinxes started out keen and willing, but without any real skill to back it up. While they had a couple of hits from this lengthy album, the rest was derivative, mediocre, or just plain horrible. A live EP was released that reimagined some of the better songs, and while it sold well and helped the bands reputation, critics almost universally panned it... Memorable Moments:
Peppermint Ushabti - Seasons 57 - 59 After a short break holidaying in Tilea, the band is back with their second studio album: Peppermint Ushabti. Originally titled 'The Face of Death', the album promises 'hard-hitting riffs' and 'in your face lyrics' - thus far, critics disagree. What will the fans think? Time will tell. Either way, with a hot new album doing the rounds, the Sphinxes have returned for another sell-out tour. While album sales have been patchy thus far, and there have been some lineup changes, the future looks bright! Time has told. The last season of the Peppermint Ushabti tour can be summed up in one word - appalling. The band was flat, the fans apathetic, and their label has dumped them. Not the Sphinxes finest hour! 'Memorable' Moments:
Season 60 - 62 Keen to put their last disastrous tour behind them, the Sphinxes have poured the clay of their emotions into musical shaped moulds that.. um.. ok, this is a laboured metaphor. Glass Pyramid is the band exploring their emotional range; from boot-stomping misery, to low-blowing anger, to face-kicking exultation, the album is rife with raw moments. Critics are already lauding the album, with Tumbling Boulder stating it is '...an album that may alienate some loyal fans, but surely win them at least a dozen new ones...' Clearly, the new producer and label have already worked their magic! Season 63 Despite early success, Glass Pyramid has taken a dramatic turn and no wallows in the bargain bins of record shops across the Southern Wastes. On top of this, news of the fall of the Sphinxes' greatest hero reached the Mausoleum. Choosing to find inspiration in grief, the Sphinxes have released their most creative album to date... Smash Hits! Season 58: After too long a wait, the Sphinxes touring schedule brought them round again to face off against bitter rivals, the Crookwell Green Devils. In their last meeting, the Devils had taken guiding light and Lead Shredder Starman to his final rest. This time, the tables were turned, and despite not causing permanent injury, the Sphinxes demoralised the Devils and gained a new legion of fans. Vengeance will still be sought from coach tribalsinner but until then, this match will help Starman to rest easy... Season 57: A thumping live show against these hapless high elves. King Jareth almost turned it into a one-man-show, taking out three Elves and scoring a touchdown. A true back and forth, this performance showed the skills of the newest stage act for the Sphinxes - the stompin' Tap-Jackals. The lasses from Lustria showed they knew how to party too, and in the end the crowd were the real winners. What a show! Season 54: Beating former Prem winners is always sweet, but even moreso when they're TWO-TIME CHAMPS. Spectators would be forgiven for thinking Public Service Announcement were fielding their second-string team, as the Sphinxes blew everyone away with a virtuoso performance. A smashing start for that particular prem tour, which sadly went downhill from there... B-Sides The soul of Glament lives on, but these players will sadly make music no more...
