The President of the Republic is elected by direct popular vote. In the regular course of<br> events, a Presidential election takes place every six years. If the incumbent dies or <br>becomes permanently incapacitated, a new President is elected as soon as possible. <br>The most recent premature election of this kind took place in 1982, after President Urho<br> Kekkonen had resigned for reasons of health. Prime Minister Mauno Koivisto won <br>that election and was re-elected in 1988. He was succeeded in 1994 by Secretary <br>of State Martti Ahtisaari, whose term of office ended on 1 March 2000. In the election <br>held on 16 January and 6 February [second round] 2000, Ms Tarja Halonen, <br>Minister for Foreign Affairs, was elected to serve from 1 March 2000 to 1 March 2006. |
