I recently started playing ranked and really enjoy it. I've played 9 games so far (3 games a piece with Norse, Halflings and Ogres) and I'm still adjusting to the higher level of competition. One of the things I have to get used to is the foul.
Now keep in mind I've played most of my games in academy where fouling is not very common in my experience. I used to only foul when fouled first and rarely did I do it to gain some form of advantage (+1 to the FF roll or superior numbers ). In ranked, however, fouling is quite a neccesity. You can still win without it but it becomes very difficult. But when is the right time?
I've struggled with this question for quite awhile and have come up with an answer I think is the correct one. The answer - anytime. T1 or T16. Winning or losing. Friend or foe. Anytime is okay. Why? Well, because it is an option you have on every turn of the game no matter what the situation might be. Are there times when it seems unnecessary? Sure, but unnecessary does not equate to you can't, only that you shouldn't.
So, I guess the question on when to foul is really up to each coach to decide. If you cannot see why they are doing it then ask them. However, if you don't like the answer please don't bash them with your reasons why they shouldn't have. I'm sure they already took it into account before fouling. That and sometimes there is no reason. Just accept it and move on to the next game of BB. It's only a game so don't take things personally.
