From Orcs to Underworld - or why I'm playing a 'weak' team
Hi,

I'm Squiglet, I've been playing BB since buying the 2nd ed (or was it 3rd ed... the one with the 'astrogranite' pitch) in my local GW way back in the distant past of my childhood. I have to admit that I've had a few breaks from playing but I recently got back into the game and stumbled over Fumbbl along with some other BB websites. After a few teething troubles (what do you mean you can't use Java on a chromebook?!) I got set up and created my first team, and that team was Orcs.

I have always played orcs, partly due to liking the fluff, and partly due to the fact I used to win with them a lot (except against Skaven those wriggly rodents and their one turn TDs really get up my nose). So I gained a new incarnation of the 'Ork Godz' / 'Sunz ov Gork' just like I've always played.

On a side note, I don't seem to play orcs in the same way as many other players - I play like my orcs want to be elves - with gobbo catchers and throwers being key figures in the team and never with a Troll. To me orcs are not a box and bash your way down the middle of the field team for a dull-dull and predictable 2-1 win, they are more like how the Orcland Raiders are described in the fluff - playing the 'right hook' - flowing around the opponents along a wing (and moving some out of the way if needed) all the way to the endzone, or, if things stall, launching a cross field pass to a free blitzer or gobbo to scamper in for the score. So why play orcs at all, why not dark elves or some other running-passing-finesse team?

The reason I have always preferred orcs over other teams is three fold. 1) Skills, orcs have a good strong starting skill base which means they play well from get go, rapidly gain SPP and pick up even more skills. 2) Positional variation - they are pretty much the only team that has blitzers, blockers, throwers and catchers (alias goblins), which allows for the most flexible play options. 3) AV 9 - and this is by far the key factor, AV 9 players die less, pick up fewer injuries and so last longer to gain more SPP and get even more skills.

So given all this - why am I now playing more games with Underworld than with my favoured orcs? Simple ego. When I play orcs I expect myself to win - they are the best team, they fit my style of play, I have always won in the past with them, so if I win I have just done as I expect, if I lose however, I have under performed, which means I need to win if I am going to enjoy the game. This in turn led to me getting worried about who I played, and actually playing less because I was worried about losing and getting stressed when I was behind in a game. Which is not the point. So I decided to try a different team - one that was expected to lose, a lot and badly, whose players will have short playing careers ending as a red smear on the pitch - so if I did lose, well that is as expected, but if I won, or just got a draw, or even a TD, or survived the match with my team alive, these are all achievements to be proud of and to feel good about.

Since I started playing my 'Six Feet Underdogs' (U-dogs for short) I have enjoyed the game more than I have in years, a glorious loss is more rewarding than a dull-dull win. Plus I get to throw gobbos at people, a lot. So that is why I've made the swap from a tier 1 team to a 'weak' lower teir team. Now all I need to do is have some players survive long enough to get some new skills and cause even more chaos on the pitch.

So if you see the U-dogs on the game finder please do offer me a game, I don't care if you are a cPOMBer, a win at all cost 'cos my ego can't take losing or a fellow stunty sploosh and splatter team. I'm in it for the fun and I will let you know how it goes.

This is exactly the reason I started playing Underworld instead of my previously favoured Skaven. I never went back. Underworld are now my favourite team, followed by Goblins and Pact. I play them more than any others and find more satisfaction in winning with them. If you read my old blogs I completed my goal to win a tourney with them about 6 months after I started :)

That's more or less why I switched to flings, then zombies. A win is so much more satisfying, and the games are much funnier :D

Astrogranite pitch = 2nd edition. 3rd edition till now uses the same pitch size.

Oh and we also have a Squig team here, with damn fine icons if you are interested.

Greetings and salutations sirs, it seems you have now learned the most valuable blood bowl skill of all; how to have fun :)

Orcs are no longer the best team. CRP has nerfed them bigtime due to Claw.

To be honest, they are barely Tier 1 anymore.

Wow, the difference between 5/2/1 and 1/1/6 is pretty big.
Aside from the challenge, when you play more I think it's good to just play as all the teams. It adds diversity, keeping the game fresh, and it also improves your play of your 'main' races, because playing AS a team teaches you a lot about its weaknesses.

Congratulations and welcome. Fresh blood to the site with such a great attitude is something we can never get enough of. Good luck on your Fumbbl journey.

Hold on...How can a Orc win be ho-hum and dull. You stated that you play your orcs teams more like elves, deftly dodging and moving down field, launching long bombs to gobos streaking down the sidelines as you BoB's create "pocket" around your inspired leader thrower guiding your orcs to global FUMBBL domination!!!!!

How is that Ho-Hum?

Good point, both claiming I play orcs in an exciting way then implying I'm changing to U-world because orcs are, as you put it, ho-hum is nonsensical. Actually I would like to retract everything I wrote above - after a couple of weeks here I have realised that the skills of coaches on FUMBBL is significantly higher than I am used to in my experience on parochial leagues and I would not expect to win the majority of games with any teams.

Sometimes a little experience is a humbling thing.

That is retract everything other than the sentiment that it should be about fun, not about just winning at all costs.
