I'm whiner too! For me, whining is like a scream in martial arts.

I'd say it works better if you keep it in game. i.e. moan about the players, the apoth, the weather, the crowd etc.
Mentioning the dice spoils the role play element for some. There ain't no dice on a football field.

There is a little tool which gandresch programmed some time ago when we had a discussion about ignoring a moaning (or insulting) opponent.
Its a little javaprogram which is nothing than a small white box exactly the size of the chatwindow. It fits perfectly and *badabing*...chatwindow gone. And now you might guess what it is called... anybody?
No?
gandresch called it "Chat Overlay"... he's a genius isn't he?
So Underworlder, you should offer this little tool to your opponents so they can blank out your whining. PM me if you need it^^
P.S. I'm a damn whiner too... it's an artform!

Kvetching, whining, threatening: these are the ways we make little informal, unstated, unofficial "bargains" with our opponents. It's a tactic, actually, and a perfectly valid one. In multiplayer games, it's actually important. Especially Settlers of Catan: a little well-aimed, well-timed griping can take you far.

My take on this matter:

Oops. Posted on Chainsaw's blog, thought I was posting here.
I really, really, really like to talk in-game, unless my opponent is complaining about my slow play. (Once had an opponent complain about my slow play, then complain about my lack of banter when I stopped chatting to play faster.... can't please 'em all.)
One thing I really like to talk about is, well, what's happening in a game. If I feel like I can't win for losing, I'll say it. If my opponent does the same, I don't mind when they say it. I'll agree or disagree, as warranted.
"I keep turning over!"
"You're rolling too many dice."
"Damn, that's like my fourth doubleskull in 11 blocks."
"Yeah, I hate that. Sometimes you eat the b'ar..."
Both of these conversations enhance the fun of the game and, and may even move the skill curve for the whining coach.
