Dissapointment at top coach
I know that CR means a lot to some and nothing to others but being higher than 175 is an indication of how good a coach they can be.
I sit at below 150 most of the time and play most challenges and enjoy whatever game i get.
Yesterday 26/06/09 I challenged a super coach to a game that was suggested by gamefinder, my orcs 130/120 with 12 players 2 rr 10 ff against undead 128/127 12 players 3rr 13 ff I got turned down because he only had 1 mummy available.
I know there is no obligation to accept a challenge or play a game suggested by gamefinder but I felt so disillusioned by a coach who I had previously had a lot of respect for and whose notes i read with interest.

One day we will play and I will get totally smashed in an unbalanced game in his favour but I will play the game.

Was going to put this as a thread about CR but that would be .............. (add own word)

pythrr quite agree with your comment that is why I stated it in the first paragraph

Sorry Pigstar there is no way I would name the coach in question, beer is flowing mate.

I have received a good pm from this coach and as usuall there are always 2 sides to everything and he raised some fair points I still stand by my initial entry but can see and accept his point of veiw and agree with his reasoning.

No one has to play any game offered. They can chose any reason they like and they don't have to tell you why.

Coaches have no choice in leagues. No choice in tournaments. No choice in [B]lackBox.
So, in an open game coaches are going to pick games that they like and turn down games that they don't like.

If CR and the championship were worth competing for I could see that it would be a problem. But they are not.

When some coaches get to a high CR they want to stay at that level so they only accept games they feel sure they can win. Fortunately not all coaches are like this and some are genuinely excellent and so can still win games that are in the oppositions favour. Pythrr is right in what he says. He quotes to the letter of the law but some dont play to the spirit of the law! ;)

Ah, so there wasn't really any point to the blog at all.

There are times I'll turn down games that are in my favour, for that very reason. I'd rather avoid playing down a lot in TS & CR cause winning wont make me happy & losing would make me really unhappy!
Are you sure he didn't want to play due to only having 1 mummy or did he just not want to play you & you presumed that bit?

OK, it is possible that he was just avoiding you though :p

Perhaps he noted both the TS and CR differences were in his favor and opted for a more difficult match. Personally, I look for matches where my opponent and I both have good chances for fun. Sometimes, that means I opt to play up in TS or decline matches that I deem unfair in my favor. I recall a match some months back where a newish coach challenged a very strong coach in Ranked to a roughly even match, and the newer coach got his fragile team bashed to bits by some tough cas dice. The very strong coach was then flamed in the forums for cherrypicking, even though he had not offered the match and the teams' TS were similar. Odd thing, it wasn't the newish coach that started that thread. :P

Well from the description you just gave it wasnt to hard to firgure out who the coach in question is. and tbh its no suprise then, he is a well known teambuilder who in his own words sees that as one of the biggest joys of this game.

These days - I do have a 'never turn down a fair challenge' policy, but there was a time where I was getting fed up of playing Chaos every damned game and spent a couple of months turning them down on principle...

Turning games down doesn't always have to be a fraidy cat thing. It might well have been here, but just saying. :)

Maybe he saw the pics from the GT and was afraid you'd eat him if he beat you too bad?

:p

I`m not surprised, that this coach rather declines challenges from orcs/dorf/khemri and I AM surprised, that you expected otherwise. His reputation for massive teambuilding is legendary.

Then again, with only 1 mummy against 4 BoBs and a troll he is outmuscled so badly, that he`ll have a very hard time to get anything done. Add to that, that alot of his TS is from DP, which he cannot use effectively on you due to being outmuscled and only having 12 players I`d say you were picking him. I would say orcs are defenitly at an advantage.

So this is more a blog about 'this top coach didn`t let me cherrypick him - how dare he?'

On the other hand, looking at the stats of the team... with 11.3 TS advantage in the first 7 games (with an TS usually below 130) it`s fair to lable him a picker.
