The situation occured in a game in the rookie rumble tournament, 0-0 after regular time, early TD in overtime, hopefully the same (surprised) team was able to score a second time :D
I liked the system with rerolls adding to the penalties shoot-out, I felt that was a tactical possibility to exploit (although it didn't work when I was in the situation... lol), now it's plain luck, that adds to the luck to receive in extra time and other luck factor in the game... :)
We'll adapt anyway... ^^

This seems to mitigate the luck factor of getting to receive first in overtime, and gives the other player a chance to strike back, which I feel is a positive change.

Good to know! And awesome that even these edge case rules are implemented on fumbbl already.

If we're playing 2016 rules do we still get the old overtime?

Yeh , had standard overtime rule in a subsequent SL 2016 overtime game so from that i think yes
