Just finished the last game of my Black Box Trophy run. Quite the journey; and I feel I am a better coach for the experience. Here are some personal musings:
Norse 11/3/1
The squad got off to great start with an exciting and bloody Norse run. TV remained low as positionals died.
Somewhat gutted to lose the final game to our biggest nightmare: Orc powerhouses. In these circumstances we dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge. Using those cheap RRs on dodges, trying to keep moving about; getting a few wry coach comments about Norse-elves. You can not afford to stand and get hit with AV8+
I did my first ever MV7 1TTD in this run, punching the air in celebration!
Amazon 8/4/3
A mixed experience . I heard they were OP, so how come I didn't win every match?! It was a slow start: with no Block they are a bit vulnerable early on. Later we lost to some strong teams and good coaches.
It can also be hard to win if Nuffle isn't supporting you. Certainly I've not the skill or focus to get results off bad dice; and that is what it'd take to win the BBT overall. I did have some jolly fun games, and plenty of daft chat.
Chaos Renegades 7/4/4
First time coaching this race I had it all to learn, and that is reflected in the results. The Big Guys let us down time and time again. And the Elf died every time an opposition coach so much as considered a 1D blitz. Amongst it all we did manage a few results, and didn't let the squad down.
Skaven 10/2/3
Previous attempts with Skaven in Black Box were painful! I've some strong Underworld experience now, and was able to translate this into a decent run. I was dreaming of a potential racial lead here, unfortunately we got smashed to pieces in our last two games. It is hard to defend with half the team in the dugout.
I found Low-TV cage diving not that reliable a tactic, even if the ball is shaken loose it can be very difficult to retrieve. You perhaps sense that the last loss just now is still a bit fresh in memory.. I need time to grieve. Or at least a cup of tea in the sunshine.
This is the first time I have completed a Trophy run. Overall I am happy with my score; it is around what a coach of my level might hope for. There will be plenty of coaches that score higher.
The Steel Gauntlet major is a fun development of the BBT idea. That is the one thing that could tempt me to try a second run, if I were gunning for a racial lead.
Big shout out to the coaches I played, many thanks for your time.
