My First Completed Blackbox Run
So, I have quite a few fumbbl games under my belt and play local leagues and go to tournaments regularly. But I have never actually completed all 60 games in a season. This time, I really to focus on teams I don't normally play, and get some skaven practice. A friend of mine said he would play orks in tabletop tournaments for a year if I played Skaven (we switched out usual teams). It's been a heck of an experience with a lot to learn from.

First, I placed 56th currently - this was not a successful run. If youre looking for the writings of a bloodbowl genius, you will not find that here. I am merely a student of the game - and I hope I always am.

Second, if you're looking at my record overall, about a third of my games are competitive ogre games where I farmed for murder for the Throne of Blood. May it's greatness return to us one day. My total record is a little misleading because of that.

Here's Woj Squad:

Nobility "Because Joe Said So" 4/1/10
Khorne "In the Nick Nolte of Time" 5/6/4
Skaven "Sols Wacally Wabbits" 4/2/9
Tomb Kings "Some Old Gizzas" 3/5/7

Nobility

This was an experiment to see if I really liked this team. I'm normally a very defensive Ork coach, so bodyguards looked great and even fend on the little guys just seemed neat. But what I learned from this team is that it's low-average AV doesn't pair well with it's skills. It wants to sit there and be able to take a hit and not move. Or take a hit and be in the same spot. But it can't because the AV doesn't last. I suffered significant injuries very early with this team, and finally got a few draws and wins in the final games. Sadly not for me - I consider it a poorly designed team - but I'm glad I had the opportunity in fumbbl to come to that conclusion.

Khorne

These guys are surprisingly fun. A lot of my losses were in the beginning with no skills - I think I had two SIs on my khorne warriors in the first or second game - they still cant pass. But theyre there now. Im actually happy with this record. I may give them another blackbox run. And I really feel that with 8 skills in a tabletop tournament, they can do very well. It was a very positive experience.

Tomb Kings

These guys just tried to disappoint. Anytime I was in control of the game, I couldnt pick the ball up or it decided to rain. Theyre too slow to reposition in case of catastrophe. As much as I like to punch things, they just don't have enough of anything else. Now, I will say, this experience likens me to them in a tabletop tournament setting where you can plug in a star player to overcome what they're missing. They have a LOT of value in that department. I just didnt experience that value in the blackbox format.

Skaven

I think everyone has a cursed team once in a while. In 15 games, this team was at a -19 casualty differential. That seems high, but I dont know for sure. I leaned a lot about positioning, practiced some one-turners (which im pretty good at now), and got some good practice for tabletop since I will be taking them to Crucible and Chaos Cup. The struggle I have is to enjoy AG wins. I love orks and beating things down. It's just satisfying to hear the sploosh of an elf - a veritable aphrodesiac. But I hear more splooshes of my own players here. There is something to ALWAYS being in the game, though. Like if im down to 7 players, I can still pull something off with them - I have a chance - versus 7 orks or 7 chaos dudes and youre practically waiting for the game to end. While AG teams suffer casualties, for the most part, I just dont care a whole lot. It's definitely a defferent mentality.

Major Lessons

- for fumbbl, it can be hard to see some of the sprites when theyre opaque. And the guys laying down sometimes look like theyre standing. I just need to take a little more time to make sure I stand everything up.

- cages aren't great for AG teams. Id make one, and folks would just tag it and say "go ahead and make some blocks - dance monkey". Im going to stick with screens almost exclusively except for a vengabus against other ag teams and stupid elfs.

- Nobility is not on the table for me. But after this Skaven challenge for tabletop tournaments, I may give Tomb Kings and Khorne a shot.

- Most of my opponents were great - I love to chat on the thing and just meet people. Thank you for being you.

- I have no idea how the blackbox tournament thing works. I followed the instructions and did the swipey thing. But I have no idea what I should get if theyre not chosen for it? An email, a message - maybe the status changes a different color if youre not chosen? Havent a clue.

Go to team standings and look at where you are. The top team from each race and a certain amount of wild cards play for the black box tourney. It is based on points.

In client settings u can switch on a thing that puts a green tick marker on players who have activated, this helps see which are laying down, standing, etc

I liken the Khemri to a tidal wave, they are a big powerful force, but any mishaps can exponentially weaken their power. They take exceptional planning and forethought in order to make up for their lack of adaptability, but they have the tools to really reward those aforementioned coach skills. They are the epitome of what a control team is. You don't bash for damage, you bash to exert your will on the opponent. I know this is a year old, but hope ya didn't run away from playing em, they are super fun and interesting.
