After numerous near-misses (including one today, during my re-install of Java which screwed me out of a potential Academy game), legionsrealm and I finally got our match underway.
In the first half, Junae scored a quick two-turner thanks to some brilliant dodging and an excellent hand-off/pass play from the linemen (linelves?). 1-0!
My plan to spend the rest of the half running away falls apart at the outset, with zombies encircling the line of scrimmage, trapping the line-fodder elves and screening the advancing of the wights and the ball. Although the team puts up some inspired goal-line defenses (including surrounding Crostic the ghoul with four players once it got the crowd-tossed ball), a POW knocks down a wardancer and leaves Crostic with an easy 3+ dodge to daylight. 1-1!
In response, I line up nine elves and leave Junae in the backfield. The kick touches back, so I hand it to wardancer Thores, who blitzes his way deep into the defense. He survives the onslaught and is surrounded, but has a clear leap for a Turn 8 touchdown... which he botches. Aaaarrggh!! In response, legionsrealm surrounds Thores, fouls him with the ghoul and KILLS him!!! Small consolation: it was an unskilled wardancer and Crostic was tossed from the game for his efforts.
The second half sees me on defense again and Thores on the other side of the line of scrimmage as a zombie. (Irony!) After legionsrealm has his fun with the line, I start off in fine fashion by Nuffling a dodge with my first action. That pretty much sets the stage as neither of us can do much of anything all half! It culminates in a scramble for the ball at the goal line and, on the bottom of Turn 8, my lineman has a chance to dodge away (2+), grab the ball (4+) and chuck it to an open wardancer, who would need to double-GFI to score the game-winning touchdown.
As you've probably guessed, I botch the 2+ dodge (AAAAAARRGHHHH WHY WHY WHY) and the game ends in a 1-1 draw. Next game: ravyn's Skaven in which I will again be a player short. Now begins the long save-up for a new wardancer!
