Re: Only masters of Zen should be silent
"I'm amazed at how many coaches carry out games in utter silence, saying nothing more than "gl&hf", "grats", "thx" and occasionally maybe a "gg"."
The Fumbbl community is pretty hostile in general. Or atleast it has been for the past 2-3 years. I think it's mostly due to the open environment, well that and being able to slander others anonymously.
With online play it's tough to tell if someone is really complimenting you or being sarcastic with even a simple 'grats' comment (they may think the TD was ridiculous or undeserved, etc). That's the disadvantage to online play, so no I don't really find it unsurprising most games are played in near silence.
Better to be silent then to unknowingly make someone angry at you for trying to have 'fun' with commentary during the game. People see things differently and it's all in the eye of the beholder.
Forgot to add that I do enjoy colourful commentary, but generally it only occurs for myself when I'm playing people I know or I encounter the rare person that doesn't mind abit of chatter. Since most of the games I play are against random people I don't know, it's rare. I'm assuming it's the same for you.
