Tournament Updates for the Coming Year

New Tournament Season Update

As we prepare to kick off a new Major season I want to give everyone an update on where things stand when it comes to tournament changes for the coming year. As always things will continue to be evaluated as we go.

Majors

Only current change planned is to move the Grotty Little Tournament back to its traditional May slot. This would move the Crown of Sand to July. The reason behind this is the GLT has the most complicated qualifier setup and having it at a time that traditionally gets the least applicants leads to issues with getting all the qualifiers filled.

Besides this prizes will continue to be evaluated.

XFL

A few changes to the XFLs. As they have already started for this season some of these are already known but will be mentioned again.

First of all welcome Cloggy back as an XFL admin. He will help Cyrus-Havoc once again.

You may have noticed that we are trying out a set schedule for XFLs this year. This means that we already know when each race is scheduled to have their tournament. The Schedule is as follows.

Round One 20th November 2019
Chaos Dwarf - Finished - Winner - PurpleChest
Necromantic - Finished - Winner - Jokaero
Ogre - Finished - Winner - Pirigin

Round Two 1st January 2020
Chaos Renegades - Playing - Winner - It could be you!
Dark Elf - Playing - Winner - It could be you!
Undead - Playing - Winner - It could be you!

Round Three 29th January
Dwarf - Pending - Winner - It could be you!
Goblin - Pending - Winner - It could be you!
Khemri - Pending - Winner - It could be you!

Round Four 26th February
High Elf - Pending - Winner - It could be you!
Lizardmen - Pending - Winner - It could be you!
Underworld - Pending - Winner - It could be you!

Round Five 25th March
Human - Pending - Winner - It could be you!
Slann - Pending - Winner - It could be you!
Wood Elf - Pending - Winner - It could be you!

Round Six 22nd April
Amazon- Pending - Winner - It could be you!
Chaos Chosen - Pending - Winner - It could be you!
Vampire - Pending - Winner - It could be you!

Round Seven 20th May
Halfling - Pending - Winner - It could be you!
Nurgle - Pending - Winner - It could be you!
Orc - Pending - Winner - It could be you!

Round Eight 17th June
Elf Union - Pending - Winner - It could be you!
Norse - Pending - Winner - It could be you!
Skaven - Pending - Winner - It could be you!

After this will be XFL Masters which will be going through some changes itself. The prize will be changed. Instead of being able to add 1 of any positional from a team you beat in the tournament you will be able to add 1 of any lineman from a team you beat in the tournament.

In addition it will lose its status as a major after this year and return to being its own thing. Reason for this is it just doesn't get the same fan fare as the traditional majors and it's qualifying system is so different. As qualifying has already started for this year it will remain a major for one more year.

Bar Brawls

No changes to Bar Brawls for the coming year

RRR

No structural changes but welcome Rawlf as the new RRR admin.

Return of FUMBBL Minors

Finally what I think is the most exciting news. One of the issues with this ruleset when it comes to majors is it allows such bloat of teams. I personally cannot complain as I have been at the forefront of this but I recognize that for coaches who are newer, or have less time to play, or simply are not interested in the very high TV game this leaves them with a more difficult path to tournament glory. Because of this I would like to bring back FUMBBL Minors.

FUMBBL Minors will be set in the month between when majors kick off. First one will be in mid February.

These will be 32 team tournaments set at either 1900, 1600, or 1300 TV + or - 30 in each case to prevent people from being able to just set their team at the highest TV way in advance.

If we have enough applicants there will be multiple 32 team tournaments drawn.

Which TV it will be will be decided by dice roll when the tournament is announced.

In addition these will use the new double elimination option for tournaments which should lead to a unique experience.

Unlike majors we will attempt to minimize byes here (as they do weird things to double elimination). Teams will be accepted starting from the TV limit and working down.

Good luck everyone in the coming year.

Minors sound cool!

thrilled to see minors back.

It is good to see Minors come back.

I've never been a fan of the +/-30 though.

Bring on the Minors!

Maybe I shouldn't yell that too loud...
Posted by cdassak on 2020-01-16 07:11:11
Great idea to bring the Minors back! /cheer

I'don't understand the +/-30 though, what is wrong with setting the team at the appropriate TV in advance?

Please bring back an exclusive R or B major!!
Posted by Muff2n on 2020-01-16 12:16:29
You are sage; the minors are the most exciting part. And timely for me too, having just entered my second highest TV team into the Warpstone Major with found myself with 1.1m inducements for the first round ;)
Posted by koadah on 2020-01-16 13:00:13
+1 to an exclusive B Major.

Great to hear about the TW-capped minors coming back. However, is there any chance they could be regional (at least some of them)? I feel like the inconvenience of scheduling with Euro coaches tends to discourage US players from entering official tourneys.

The +- 30 TV is something that I would like to test but if it turns out people don't like it I have no problem removing in the future.

Majors (and all tournaments) were merged for a reason. In addition last year of the 10 finalists in majors 5 were from box and 5 were from ranked. If you add XFL masters 7 were from box and 5 were from ranked so its not like box teams have trouble competing.

Regional tournaments are not something I am considering at this time. Splitting the player base up will only make it more difficult for tournaments to fill.
Posted by JellyBelly on 2020-01-16 23:01:45
Fair enough. Although, it seems to me the player base is already split regionally ...
