It has been a long time since I have last written one of these developmental blogs for ERPL. It might seem a little silly to take a League so seriously that it needs developmental blogs. Obviously, it kind of is. I could just as easily not said anything and break the news of this league the moment it is actually opening for public.
Honestly though, I know that there must be some of you who are very intrigued by the possibilities of custom rosters in [L]. ERPL will be a league that will take full use of all the new options [L] will have when Christer implements them.
Now that Ranked and Blackbox are fully converted and tournaments are under the way, I think the changes to [L] are coming closer, so that is why I decided it is time for a new blog. So, today I present the following to you:
Random Events & Quests
Ranking System
New Teams: Hobgoblin, Nipponese, Amazon & Bretonnian
Concluding Thoughts
Random Events & Quests
In my last blog I mentioned that there would be Inter-Match events between season-phases. What bothered me with that idea, is that random events should come randomly and unexpected. So I abandoned that idea.
What I am thinking now is that every week I roll for every team to see if they will get a Random Event/Quest. Right now I am thinking of a 1 in 6 chance of something happening, but I might increase or decrease. The idea is that random events increase enjoyment and fluff-immersiveness without impacting games and teams too much. Ergo, a team might gain or lose a skill, some gold or anything like that now and then, but there should be nothing game-breaking.
Sometimes a random event would be a Quest, if the event is more than a one-off happening. For example:
Random Event Example
One of your players has been kidnapped and is being held for ransom!
Option 1: Pay for ransom
Option 2: Learn to live without the player
Random Quest Example
A local goblin shaman is offering her services to the team.
Option 1: Accept
Option 2: Turn down the offer
Obviously, in the case of the Quest, there would actually be future events happening if Option 1 would be chosen (and possibly even if Option 2 would be chosen). It is hard to say if they would be positive, negative or something in between, so there is rarely a right choice.
In fact, that is quite important. This is just meant to be fun, and to bring extra dynamics to the game and a bit more team management. There will always be choices in these events, and none of them is the right one. One might be riskier than another, but the payoff might be bigger. At other times, it is impossible to see what the consequences are.
I hope this will bring an extra dynamic to the game and will make the coach feel more immersed and bonded with his team. Intrigued? I hope so...
Obviously, a lot depends on how much control the league administrator(s) will have in the new L when it comes to messing with rosters, as it only works if that is a possibility.
Ranking System
Some might think by now that this league will be quite weird and silly. Possibly so, but that does not mean the game will be taken any bit less serious. I will do my best to make sure all the races are balanced like they should be (Snotling teams should not beat a developed Wood Elf team normally, but rosters should be on the power level as I want them to be). I will listen to all the feedback there is as the league is under way, and if necessary, changes would be made to assure competitiveness.
Because I think we all know, that the more competitive games are, the better. If every game you play, there is something at stake, with some special important games to top it off, you know you are going to have a better time than when nothing matters.
This is why there is something as a CR and a BWR, and this is why Majors and other tournaments exist. It is fun.
So, besides all the games to determine Regional Champions and the World Champion in every season and besides one or more tournaments at the end of a season, I am going to make sure you will care about the games that don't even really matter anymore. Say you know you are not going to be the Regional Champion anymore. Why would you care about that last game when you aren't going to make it anyway?
There will be a Ranking System, that works somewhat like CR/BWR works and how ratings for Chess players are also determined. Every game you play your rating will shift depending on whether you win or lose. And here is the fun part. Your ranking matters. For tournaments, ranking will determine who you might play first. If there are enough players, different tiers will be determined by the ranking system. And even random events and quests will be influenced by your ranking...
Moreover, I will likely update these rankings weekly, and either send them out through PM or post them in the forum, but people will be able to see how your rating will be rising and falling. Combine that with the occasional preview of special matches? And yeah, people will be interested if you are doing especially well or especially poorly... There is going to be a lot of incentive to do well every single game!
New Teams
I thought it might be nice to show you some of the new teams you might be playing with or against. Not just to give you a taster of what they are liker, but also to show you that I am not just thinking up the rosters at random. Let me show you.
Amazon
I think there are not many that are satisfied with the dull roster of the Amazon, which is both under- and overpowered, depending on TV level and opposition. So, this league will be using Ian Doubleskulls' roster. It is quite decently playtested, and way more dynamic!
0-16 / Linewoman / 50,000
6 / 3 / 3 / 7 / Fend / AG
0-2 / Thrower / 70,000
6 / 3 / 3 / 7 / Hail Mary Pass, Pass, Safe Throw / AGP
0-4 / Catcher / 70,000
8 / 2 / 3 / 7 / Diving Catch, Dodge / AG
0-4 / Blitzer / 90,000
7 / 3 / 3 / 8 / Wrestle / AGS
ReRolls: 50,000
Bretonnian
There have been many Bretonnian rosters floating over the internet throughout the years. All have their pros and cons. There is, however, one Bretonnian roster designed with CRP in mind, and reasonably heavily playtested, thanks to coach Plasmoid.
Here it is:

Hobgoblin
From the Eastern Steppes, these are the Hobgoblins that are not aligned with the Chaos Dwarves. All of the many nomadic tribes owe fealty to the might warlord Hobgobla-khan, and they are sneaky and savage on the fields of war as well as the Blood Bowl pitch.
0-16 / Hobgoblin / 40,000
6 / 3 / 3 / 7 / None / G
0-4 / Evil Git / 80,000
8 / 3 / 3 / 7 / Dodge / GA
0-4 / Sneaky Git / 80,000
6 / 3 / 3 / 7 / Side Step, Shadowing, Stab / G
0-1 / Ogre / 140,000
5 / 5 / 2 / 9 / Loner, Mighty Blow, Thick Skull, Throw TeamMate, BoneHead / S
ReRolls: 60,000
Nipponese
In the far Orient, much is hidden. This is the land of the Rising Sun, where Ninjas and Samurai battle for honour, veiled in mystery...
0-16 / Ashigaru / 50,000
6 / 3 / 3 / 8 / None / G
0-4 /Samurai / 80,000
6 / 3 / 3 / 9 / Block / GS
0-2 / Ninja / 110,000
8 / 3 / 4 / 7 / Dodge, Shadowing, Side Step / GA
0-2 / Sumo Warrior / 110,000
4 / 4 / 2 / 8 / Juggernaut, Dauntless, Stand Firm / GS
ReRolls: 60,000
Concluding Thoughts
I have, of course, no idea when [L] will be ready for ERPL. That is all up to Christer, and we know how sometimes things can happen fast. I will be ready for it when the time comes, and I hope you will be interested to join the madness!
If you want to sign up already and make sure you will be able to play a specific roster, don't hesitate and send me a PM or drop by in the #ERPL channel!
And finally, a small reminder: everything you read here, is subject to change. I will change rosters if I see the need to it, or I will change the details on Events & Quests depending on what is possible and what people seem to like. In general though, there is one clear direction: a fluff-immersive, well-structured, customised and pleasantly mad League!
