My Blackbox Trophy 13 - A summary
(Prelim. after 29 games. Will be updated. CR image may be visible only after approval of upload)

'Sometimes you gotta close a door to open a window'. After a very good time in 145 Graduate league, I decided to play my first ever Blackbox Trophy. Willing to jump into the 'Shark tank' and push myself a bit out of my comfort zone, but also because blackbox offers the most flexible way of finding games fast, without falling into the trap of beeing picky.

(unofficial BBT banner)

My main focus here still was learning, but I also wanted to try a positive record for each of the (Elven) rosters. In the beginning I was not sure if times really allows to complete the 60 games of a full squad run, but if so my goal was to aim for a position within the top 60. So putting a little bit of pressure on myself to sharpen the senses for learning. And the idea to complete an E.L.F II cycle was - as always - very tempting. Eventhough I knew from the beginning that a lot of luck was needed to spin into the required 10 specific rosters with only 15 tries.

To gain a little bit of an clear picture, the idea from the very beginning was to play only Blackbox games in C Division during the BBT season and only add some SL2020 or [L] tournament matches. And so I played my last GF Game on December 17th, 2024.

So here it is, the the condensed summary including links to the matches. And for all of you asking 'Why all that?' Mostly for myself. To save it for my later self. ;-)

Elven Union
(8/1/6)
Dark Elf
(0/1/1)
Wood Elf

Over all I am quite happy with the results. I played against some really good coaches and mostly had a good time. There were matches that could have been won with a bit more of Nuffle's help. But there also were matches I only won thanks to his intervention. In the end it is a dice game, right?

If I need to take away one major learning, it is this: If you want to play an Elf roster be prepared to play with a lot of loners. So far the maximum Elven loners in one match was 5 while the maximum carnage was caused in a game with 3 kills against me.

And the secondary learning: Keep on playing even if your first spin was against Malmir!

For all those intested in even more data and in the spirit of the Red Badge of Courage a short overview of the CAS against each of the teams:

Elven Union
(11/18/4)
Dark Elf
(0/2/1)
Wood Elf
(13/14/3)
High Elf Elf
(0/0/0)
one more player died on the pitch and two -AV busted players needed to leave the team....two more player died on the pitch and four stat. busted players needed to leave the team....

And for all those who believe in ranks and ratings, I try to provide some data about the little rollercoaster ride the BBT offered in that regard. As said before I do not mind too much about my rank or CR, just because luck - at least at my coaching level and in such a small sample size - seems to be a bigger factor than my skills.

Hope you enjoyed the reading as much as I did enjoy swimming in the 'Shark tank' or with the words of coach ThierryM the 'sea of opportunities for great interactions between coaches from all over the world'.

Cheers,
Chris

Well done for diving headfirst into the ‘sea of opportunities’ looks like you are doing great.

We had a good game and I remember thinking my Gnomes vs your Woodies would be a horror match up for me, but we had a good game and I came out on top just. Well done on moving out of your comfort zone and into the shark tank as you call it. Good luck on your journey!

@BeanBelly: Thanks for the flowers. As I wrote, I feel pretty blessed with the current results and I Look Forward what the 'sea of opportunities may offer for the 2nd half of the run.

@ClayInfinity: I also remember the game against your Gnome. ;-) Good Lück to you as well!

Nice win! Suck it, 'Legend.'

And two more Legend beat downs. Nice!
And also stomping on a 'Mega-Star' after you just got him demoted from Legend. You're a hammer now!

@The_Murker: As I said to me it feels more like luck and roster match ups... On the other side there were losses that were the opposite... So you better do not weight too much into a single match. As long as my Box winrate is below 50% I would not talk about a hammer. Maybe more like a needle finding a lucky opening in a solid armour.

Very detailed write-up & some very nice wins mixed in there! However, I'm confused...with 61 days remaining, BBT 13 is not yet over. Do you plan to finish the run w/ the other elf teams yet?
Posted by CrisisChris on 2025-03-01 06:14:19
@Nightbird: No need to be confused... or even fear I do not try to finish the run. I guess within the text it is not too explicitly stated, but just below the headline there is this little remark 'Prelim. after 29 games...'

So yes I will try to complete the run and I will update this Blogpost accordingly.
