I've never played D&D and heard about it as this prehistoric grandfather of RPGs. I notice several things about this article.
1. D&D is today and was before a pretty dull limited game about entering Dungeons and fighting dragons and nothing else.
2. There was a time where the game was actually evolving into a real RPG where you could approach other goals like becoming pope and were the rule system was more a minor obstacle to the storyline.
3. This path must have been abandoned by the time of computer games, wich held only very little freedom. And the computer games wich were inspired by the RPGs would now in return inspire gameing groups to go back to a more primitive dice rolling and monster beating where discussing deep plotlines and charakter changes had no place. Just if that'S all what D&D has to offer there is more point to actually play it on a computer.
