Qaz, that's kinda the point behind this post :).
At the very least, turn off any java-autoplaying you have going in your browser. I believe that bug affects the sandbox (the bit of Java that prevents a webpage from installing viruses on your computer), allowing a website that can run Java to install a virus as you browse the web.
For Chrome, visit: chrome://plugins/ and disable "Java" if it is there.
For Firefox, follow the instructions here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/How%20to%20turn%20off%20Java%20applets

If I ever win the Powerball (seems unlikely since I've played exactly once in the last 5 years but we can dream) I plan to donate a million bucks to move us to a more secure client (HTML 5? Adobe ... just kidding they're less secure).

I'm ok, I'm on Java 5!
The alternative is to have plug in disabled and only activate them when you are sure of the source.

Cannot run the client with Java 7 (Windows 7, new computer). No idea why. Maybe give up on this laptop and use the other...

I concur that Java 7 makes the client extremely annoying.
Every sound is enmeshed in distorted fuzz. The player names, team names, and on-pitch logos are all reflected, such that they fall off the surface of the page.
