Dwarfs: Blood Bowl on Easy
I don't like to rehash dead topics, and I certainly don't like to trot out anyone's favorite dead horse, and give it a few extra whacks. But, I'm making an exception today.

<rant>

I've joined the Human Premiership, and so have been playing Humans in the box, and in fact have been playing the Box in general. Up until this point the Box was not a place I spent a lot of time, choosing instead to play Ranked, or League.

One opinion I've held for years, and one that keeps being reaffirmed is that Dwarfs, as presented, are the easiest team to play with, and win with, in Blood Bowl.

Now, I'll take into consideration min-maxed teams (Pact, Necro) can win more reliably once built, but it takes dozens of games to reach that point. Dwarfs start with all the skills necessary to win, with little effort, right out of the gate.

A basic Dwarf lineman has Block, Tackle, Thick Skull to start. This gives him two of the best blocking skills, on top of AV 9, all for a very reasonable cost. Add Guard, Stand Firm, or Might Blow to that list, and you have a rock-solid lineman, for cheap.

Runners, and Blitzers add some much needed speed, and access to Passing skills, for the Runners. With a few stat boosts on the right player it's trivial to build a rock solid ball carrier, with an ablative coating of Guard, Stand Firm, Block, Tackle, AV 9 meat.

Team progression is straight forward, with the utility skills coming out of the box, the only necessary skills are Guard, more Guard, and some Stand Firm.

Dwarfs only "downside" is their low movement, but with tackle across the board, it's rare that a high speed team is going to do much dodging. Given that all it takes is one failed doge, without a Dodge re-roll, and you have a turnover. Turnovers leave you in a bad spot, with a dwarven meat-grinder poised to walk right through you.

Long story short, I find the team dull to play, and dull to play against.

Dwarfs are awesome, just claw up and smash them around.

Or, play CD, they are even more awesomer!

You didn't open your <rant> tag. This makes me sad.

<rant> tag added.

I don't see CD as better dwarfs. The Hobgoblins are too crunchy. Part of what makes Dwarfs so easy to play is the high AV across the board, combined with all the utility skills. The Hobs take too long to develop, and die to easily. The bulls are fantastic, but really need a skill, or two, to reach potential. Dwarfs are there right out of the gate.

Claw, in a Chaos or CD context, takes a long time to develop. Chaos especially takes a dozen or more games to start to develop CPOMB, Dwarfs are a rock solid hitting team right out of the gate.

If you think they are that good in the box, play them.

I suspect your view might change after 20 or so games.
Posted by ignatzami on 2013-02-08 01:40:23
Perhaps, but I'm not talking just about the box. In fact, I think the high number of min-maxed bash teams in the box makes it one of the only environments where Dwarfs would have a harder time thriving. Yet they are still the fourth most numerous team in the box.

As for playing them, no thanks. I've run dwarfs before, on Fumbbl, and on the table, and they are boring, it's just not a fun team to coach.

Wow as high as 2.6, 3 people must agree with you!

If you have humans, games against Dorfs can be purgatory......

All types of elves and skaven have much higher winning percentage than dwarves. Nearly every team is going to have a higher winning percentage. I agree that dwarves can be a pain to play against - I also agree that their tactics are limited and they are good at what the do. However, they can not compete against good elf teams - there just is no comparison in a one-off game...elves win hands down.

I find the opposite to be true, a well developed dwarf team (1.5-2mil) should have little trouble taking apart an elf team. The low armor, combined with tackle everywhere makes it very east for Dwarfs to control the pace of the game.

Bollocks

Yeah just cause clawplomb beats dwarfs doesn't mean dwarfs aren't still duking it out with zons to be the lamest team ever. :O

But what else is new?
Posted by neoliminal on 2013-02-08 06:03:01
The Dwarves real downside is AG 2, MV 4. Since you play a lot of humans you can appreciate that any player on the human team can pick up the ball and run it in for the TD. You have probably done this yourself in a pinch.

On a Dwarf team, there are four players that you need to stop. Just four, and then can't score. More problematic is that the guys who are supposed to be defending these four players are again... MV 4. They can't help enough.

If you're having problems stopping Dwarves, here's the secret... send two guys after anyone with AG 3.

Azure's right... elves win.

Dorf's have to play a perfect game to beat elves. Elves just have to get lucky a few times.

Block+Tackle is not as good as AG4 across the board. Sure your guys won't die as easy. They will live... as losers...

Loser-dorf-short-hairs that nobody loves.

Dwarfs are NOT the easiest race to play by a long shot. Sure they have block and tackle, but they are slow as dirt and screw up and lose the ball and have fun trying to get it back.

All the elf teams are easier for instance.

i'd say you need to win a couple of tournaments with dwarfs before you can really make such an assessment.
Posted by Purplegoo on 2013-02-08 08:31:19
Dwarves even struggle against teams with high strength; Lizards, Orcs, Khemri (!), even before you factor in the Claw / MB / PO rock n' roll.

Dwarves are often seen as too good by newer players. A bit of experience later, and they're actually a challenge. To win consistently with Dwarves past base TV, you either have to know what you're doing or have rolled some really special players.

Part of the beauty of the game is that everyone has something to hate. Every team is a bastard when it beats you, but they're all fallible.
