It's Starting!!!
Last month a new gw store named warhammer opened in my city and they are running a BB league!

The owner/manager seems like a great guy. He told me he had great memories of playing TT in the 90s and called corporate HQ to ask if they were cool with him running it in store.

Not only did they say YES they recommended it to get people excited for the new release. He must have noticed my extremely skeptical expression and said HQ also told him only gw minis would be allowed. Then he tried to get me to buy a crazy expensive sigmar plastic box set to convert...

Our local league is split on playing at this new shop or to continue playing at each others houses with beers.

I think it is safe to say our little hobby and favourite game will be experiencing some major growing pains and as much as I have ranted with friends about how shit gw is/can be they probably hook a new generation of players.

I am excited and slightly worried.

This is my take on it: GW wants to make money selling miniatures. They also seem willing to give Blood Bowl another try, but it seems they are going to demand that participating locations push their (GW's) miniatures. I don't have a problem with this and I think it would be good for the game to get GW behind it again. But each of us will have to make our own decision about if and how they want to go along with this new direction. I also think if GW finds this initial push profitable, they may ease up on the 'GW-only' restriction.

I wonder how this will affect locations that already run Blood Bowl events, and also NAF events?

GW owned shops will never allow non GW minis. I think they've proven that time and again.

Ah, i remember when the stores sold other peoples games as well and were true hobby shops. I havn't set foot in my local branch (now called Warhammer obvioulsy, ffs!) in over 15 years. I may pop in and ask some questions about Blood Bowl to see if they know anything more.

It is probably reasonable they only allow their own miniatures to be used in their stores. But they can't do anything about it elsewhere. People can play their game but substitute figures or other play pieces with whatever they like. Having a BB league in their shop will help them sell some of their teams.
Actually even 6 months ago I heard the Calgary GW staff were running a little BB league with only GW models.
