Throughout time, almost all cultures in the Old World have had to answer the question of how to train the next generation's leaders. Whether that is Elves and Men born to the privilege, Orcs and Ogres wishing their off-spring grow to be the biggest and strongest, or Chaos Gods manipulating future champions from a young age, the results are the same: One must lead successfully in battle to be accepted as a great leader.
After many generations of miserable defeats for first-time commanders, word came from the new-world of a training program set down by the immortal Slaan. Any aspiring leader could (for a fee) travel to a hidden temple complex in Lustria where they would compete in an endless Bloodbowl tournament, their teams consisting not of their peers, but of lowly, generic members of their races, their acumen as commanders tested in ways not possible with grand supporting troops, or on actual battlefields.
Some have their dreams crushed, some lose their very lives, but those who succeed return to the Old World with abilities to command and inspire rarely seen. What the Slaan are gaining by influencing these future leaders is only known to their far-reaching minds. We just watch the games!
