Finally found a way to make chess fun
on vacation my teenage daughter and I found a chess board. Because she never really played, it was difficult for her and she was about to quit.
Then our youngest, who's 3 years old, came by and said "ooh, horsies. I like horsies." and picked up all the knights off the board. We kept playing. Then I took a rook with a Queen. The toddler promptly put it back on the board. Kept playing.
Then she took my king to play with the horsies. I lost.
We found that "3 year old chess" is a hell of a lot more fun. It's like regular chess, but you have a 3 year old play too...whatever they do...is immediately official. If your king is taken, you lose. If the king is put into check and it's your opponent's turn...you lose.

Beats both 1 year old and 100 year old chess - lots of drool on the pieces.

lol -- For me and my 4 yr old, "chess" is where we open the box, take out the pieces, set them all up, play "what's this called?", then put everything back in the styro again.

Apparently Henry the XVIII changed this original form when he lost once, he beheaded the childs mother and promptly installed CofE (Chess of England)...

Used to do something similar to make pool more interesting when drunk at the pub. Get someone to stick plastic cups over the balls while the players aren't looking so they have no clue what colour they're aiming at.
