So I'm in the progress of making a foray into the local tabletop scene. I'm playing humans, which may not be a surprise to some. I had a look round for some mini's and settled on the
Black Scorpion set, as they seemed the best suited for a table top version of my Sons of Brutus. The purpose of this blog to provide a little bit of a review, as the webstore has limited images. Mine aren't great photo's as I was just using a mobile to take a few snaps, but I think they help.
There are two aspects to the team that I'm not so keen on, but these are apparant before you buy so we'll get these out of the way first.
Firsty, team composition is a bit weird. They provide 3 blitzers, 2 catchers , 1 thrower and 5 linemen. It's like they want you to buy the 4th blitzer seperately. They also sell Ogre figures, but I wasn't happy with the style of the ogre compared to the style of humans, so I'm still looking for an Ogre to add in future.
Secondly, the distinction between positionals and linemen is limited. They have provided the blitzers with a taller head crest and an extra ridge either side of the crest. On the tabletop this would need a clear distinguishing paint scheme for them not to simply blend in with the linemen.
I'm also not that keen on the catchers that come with cloaks. Visually I feel this makes the catchers seem bulkier than I like and certainly not less armoured and faster than the rest of team.
Very happy with the Thrower though.
As I said, these things were clear from the get go, so I'm still very happy with my purchase.
The price point was decent, and being resin they are still reasonably easy to work with. The details are decent and the casts are good with only faint mold lines on some of the figures. Their quality is certainly better than some forgeworld 40k stuff I've had in the past. They perhaps aren't as slick as some of the newest teams out there being produced via 3D modeling but the style is very much on theme my purposes. Delivery was prompt, about a week from the UK to Australia, and well packaged. I'd definately buy from Black Scorpion again.
Of course there are no rules about who you deploy in which role, and I'm in the process of customising them to suit.
I'd decided to make greater table top distinction by adding in a pair of elf catchers from Black Scorpion, which gives me a faster, softer looking catcher. They come with ponytails and pointy ears so I'll be giving them a hair cut and some cosmetic surgery.
In terms of the blitzers, I'd decided I was going to look at using the catcher models with cloaks as blitzers, so I'm planning on either converting or greenstuffing some cloaks onto two more. The other thing I was going to do was shave the head crest off the linemen, leaving crests on the thrower and blitzers to help with visual identification.
I've included a couple of shots of the first two and after some knife work and a quick file I'm reasonably happy with how it's going at this early stage.
