In an ideal world then yes this would be possible but I don't know how much work it involves to make it happen. At the moment we don't do it and there is probably a reason Christer has not already made this possible. Something to look into though.....

As far as I know it isn't possible to delete teams due to the mess this would make of the database.

I'm quite sure though, that it would be possible (not sure about easy) to give all teams whose coaches have been absent longer than X amount of time a generic team name such as renamed team(number). That would free up team names without any effect on the database.

I think it's very easy for the admins to change those names. It's just that it would be a bother to them to do it for everyone who asked so they made it a strict policy not to do it.
