Why I HAVE TO play slow
Look what I did in turn 8 of the first half in this replay, as I try to set up a one turn touchdown. It fails horribly, but I really gave my best to fill all holes and took a few minutes to set it up. I failed and it was a very easy attempt with only two pushbacks. That is my problem, I cannot imagine the outcome of a moved item, like if I see 1, 2 and 3 of a dice and the dice is turned, what numbers show next to me? It is a lack in logical mathematical intelligence and I wouldn't be able to play the game if the turn time limit was two minutes.
So once and for all stop mocking about such a weakness. Accept that the game has a four minute turn time rule to allow people like me to compete in this game. Press turn end button with the quickness of Lucky Luke but don't spread hatred.

(I had to think a few seconds after this block if it is wise to reroll to get a pushback to chainpush my ball carrier one square further... you can imagine my surprise when I saw where the only blue dice popped up) :D

You should never take more than 2 minutes.

You don't have to physically roll dice, or move miniatures, or markers.

Playing slower than 2 minute turns means you are probably over thinking, or maybe you have a handicap.

I made an intelligence test many years ago as a youth and I had a mathematical intelligence of the bottom end of below average, close to a learning disability. I wasn't sad about this result as I gladly heart of talents in other areas.

It's fine as long as it's not metagaming.

Grats on being a good bb coach despite this deficit.

You really don't HAVE to play slow. You could play fast and poorly like the rest of us! :)
Posted by Dominik on 2015-10-11 01:26:28
Could you play better if you went over 3 minutes in most of the turns?
Posted by Subs on 2015-10-11 01:40:24
Play as you want mate... Rules say you have four minutes so use it as you like :)

"Playing slower than 2 minute turns means you are probably over thinking, or maybe you have a handicap." is typically the kind of sentence i am totally disagree with...

Modern world want you speedy and hyper efficient but forget the great art of taking your time quietly... We're not some kind of ugly golden boys, we are adulescents playing a dice game...

Perhaps you have to read Milan Kundera Bill :) There are a lot of things which are far better when they are do really slowly :) Take your time, be patient, enjoy :)

"Watch what I did in turn 8 of the first half in this replay, as I try to set up a one turn touchdown"

Absolutely not, the replay will take too long.
Posted by Khor_Varik on 2015-10-11 02:25:05
Dominik, I understand what you mean. There are many examples here of coaches who could play better if they were cogitating while playing. Most of them don't play slowly because if they do they have less fun. I think you put on a great display of courage to play like you do, and it should be encouraged instead of being despised.
Stay strong!

That is why I provided a screenshot of the moment where I recognized that my attempt to score failed horribly: http://abload.de/image.php?img=ottfailekbx4.jpg

Thank you for your words!

It's a strategy game, you need to think things trough, and there's a time limit... anything under that should be considered more than reasonable. That's one of the reasons I like this game, it's not a stressful game full of split-second decitions.

P.S.: As a non-BB tip, Alt + Print Screen will screenshot only your active window, saving time cropping the pic.

I guess if you need all that time, it's allowed...

But it does kill the fun for 99% of Fumbbl.

I keep my turns less than 2 minutes. I think everyone who's played 500 or more games does as well.

If winning on Fumbbl is that important for you, at least it keeps you from shooting up a school or something, right?
Posted by animefreak2599 on 2015-10-11 07:33:36
gotta go fast
Posted by animefreak2599 on 2015-10-11 07:35:30
if you aren't super panicky and nervous and don't make terrible mistakes as soon as your turn begins that quickly spiral into more and more mistakes that then snowball into a constant stream of embarassing losses then you're probably a better player than me
Posted by pythrr on 2015-10-11 08:08:58
Dom, we've had our disagreements, but thanks for coming out about this -- it's a brave thing to say, and I for one will be more patient with you in the future.

don't listen to the normative haters.
Posted by koadah on 2015-10-11 08:46:01
People whine if you are too slow. Then they whine even louder if you decline their game offers to avoid their whining. ;)

I find it a lot easier to just stick to the [L]eague division.

It may be worth practicing your one turn scores in test mode though. You just know that some people will be aching to press that button. For a lot of people OTSs don't come often enough to be any good at them.
Posted by BillBrasky on 2015-10-11 09:24:12
Koadah...

Are you touched in the head?

This guy has played over 1000 games...
Posted by Russo on 2015-10-11 10:30:08
Hahaha....Kodah you are on his "Never Again List"
Are you trying to get on his good side :-)

However I do agree that OTS chances come so infrequently that you panic when setting up because you are trying to make sure you don't fluff it up before you even start.
Posted by Shraaaag on 2015-10-11 11:05:52
I have the opposite problem. If I play slow, I get impatient, lose focus and mess up.
If I can't predict my opponent's action, and make a quick decision about what to do, I lose momentum and confidence. Playing alot with Goblins, Nuffle usually make the choices for me :)
Posted by akaRenton on 2015-10-11 11:39:10
Fair play for the honesty about why you take a long time on your turns. I'm one of the ones who likes faster play, but can at least understand now why that's less of an option for you.
Posted by JimmyFantastic on 2015-10-11 11:55:56
Although I take the mick out of all the people who take a long time I think it's fair enough. It is a strategy game and I would like to think more instead of clicking randomly through my turns in 45 secs tbh. I'll still time you out .25 seconds after the 4 minutes though :D
Posted by koadah on 2015-10-11 13:36:49
@Bill: I've played more than 1000 games. What is your point?

@Russo: Not really. ;)
Posted by Russo on 2015-10-11 14:37:22
:-)
Posted by cdassak on 2015-10-11 15:25:52
I admire all strong coaches that make good use of the clock to find the best sequence of actions (endzone comes to mind too), so Dom you have my respect as a player but I will time you out in tourneys, its your great strength and weakness:)

Posted by Kam on 2015-10-11 15:57:53
I believe we have only played once if I'm not mistaken, and indeed your slow play bored me, which at some point made me lose my focus, just like against other 4 minuters. When you spend more than one hour with someone but only get to play 15 mins or so, yeah it's boring.

That being said, I also know slow players are also disturbed by relatively fast opponents, as they don't have time to think during their opponent's turn.

C'est la vie. If there were more coaches on fumbbl, I'd advocate for a 2 mins division and everyone would be happy, but that couldn't work, considering the current state of the league.
Posted by JackassRampant on 2015-10-11 16:11:38
I used to play painfully slowly; now I play faster, but I feel your pain. I made my way onto a lot of blacklists back in the day. I think now that I play a lot faster (I still don't get every turn done in 2 minutes, sorry, Bill) I miss some stuff, I do fewer really creative moves, but it hasn't had a big effect on my win rate.
Posted by ArrestedDevelopment on 2015-10-11 16:18:43
I think if anyone has whatever reasons to use the full 4min (or even slightly over) that is fair enough. Sometimes things simply require a little more thought. Sometimes 2min to drink scotch while planning your turn 16 foul is warming.

People like to stress the statistical side of this game and encourage people to learn probabilities (or at least know %chance of outcome). It isn't really about that - if you are able to, you can and should reduce BB to a series of set plays where you understand where you can/should end up no matter what the outcome is of each individual move. This is both hyper-conservative, brutal to play against (and play as), and undoubtedly un-fun for most people. But coupled with the fact that defending is all about predicting and out-maneuvering your opponent, it does show that BB is much more about pattern recognition and spacial geometry. You cannot predict luck, but you can plan for it.

But w/e, you're still a better coach than me, and you can undoubtedly converse in more languages. We all have different strengths.

I call metagaming. I bet Dom is a maths genius. I'll still be timing him out. .. :p
Posted by PaddyMick on 2015-10-11 21:41:17
Well said Dom. For those who get annoyed at turns longer than 2 minutes: what's the rush? Do you have a short attention span?
Posted by Wreckage on 2015-10-11 22:19:20
Giving the game proper respect would mean to plan a turn for 8 month before moving. :P
Posted by pythrr on 2015-10-11 23:53:19
@PeteW

I bet you kick puppies too, you bad man! ;)
Posted by Kam on 2015-10-12 00:06:30
@ AD: word. Patterns recognition is indeed what makes you play faster. Every game is different, yet so similar..
Posted by thoralf on 2015-10-16 15:22:10
> I cannot imagine the outcome of a moved item, like if I see 1, 2 and 3 of a dice and the dice is turned, what numbers show next to me?

Could be related to visual memory, conditional reasoning, or a bit of both. Could be caused by a cognitive bottleneck, an emotional one, or a bit of both. Observing your games, I'd say you're more risk averse than cognitively challenged.

Visual memory can be trained using visualization exercises, like playing moves in your head. Conditional reasoning may be harder to train, because it can lead to analysis paralysis.
Posted by Calcium on 2015-10-20 17:39:23
Yep, this smacks of Dom playing the sympathy card, and I'm not buying into it.

Your point would have some legs if you didn't take 4 mins EVERY turn, or is every turn as difficult?
