I think they are best off with 0 skills, unless double or stat increase.

second normal without rolling doubles = fire. And that is the case for every stunty in competitive divisions in my opinion.
Stunty is another thing.

Well... Retiring them if they don't roll doubles will make it hard for your team to ever face ant CPOMB'ers.. :D
But, it does make it pretty difficult to keep a team running without firing them (I Should know), sadly. Pretty sure the "norm" is to just sack everyone that don't roll a stat or double on first (or 2nd roll), that way you get more flings trough the SPP-mill, and with the 1st skill a 6points, you get a lot of "real estate" for firing the ones that don't roll well.
I for instance would like a +ag fling at 6SPPs more that my suprestar at 150SPPs. :D

SS/DT flings are great.
Besides that, do you REALLY think a fling who never rolled a double is gonna survive to get a third skill?
In almost 500 games, that never happened to me. :)

Who needs to fire anyone, when there's such a thing as the line of scrimmage? Natural churn.

If you're worried about the TV value of non-doubles halflings, you're doing it wrong.
You're playing halflings - just sit back, relax, and enjoy the beauty of trying ridiculous plays.
Having recently started playing them myself, I've found them to be incredibly fun with the right attitude.

Agree that the essence of playing flings is relax and enjoy - only way to play them - but its a different experience when you have the right ingredients (dirty players, stat freaks, +mv blocking trees, kick ;) etc). Have a look at Zed's and Garion's teams - no ordinary flings ;)

...or the Flying Sammiches - no disrespect to Kam ;)

Burnalot: "I think they are best off with 0 skills, unless double or stat increase."
This.

Best as you buy them. In some circumstance an agility or speed increase or sure feet / sprint may give your team an extra dimension: more reliable TTM. But TTM is not the best way to win games, so use with caution, and don't raise expectation when you try it.

I like having 2 ss dt flings. A third normals on them, or more than 2 flings with only normals is a waste imo. If you can afford to replace them on third normals (or third player with only normals), do so.
I wouldn't build a sure feet sprint catch fling until you roll a +AG or +MA.
Oh and cdassak, you wound me! I may not be 'a fling coach' like Zed, Garion, or Kam (as I have lots of teams of all races), but I'd like to think my little hobbits can hold their own:

@ the OP: the golden rule is: no double, no apo. If you follow it, you won't have to ask yourself that kind of questions. ;)

Haha, sorry to hurt your feelings, thats a great dirty team you have there!
Obviously there are other great fling coaches, your team is a tribute to them, these came to me first. Zed and Kam are your treemen after all :P

II just stick the players who dont roll doubles or stats on the line O' scrimmage. Let Nuffle sort them out.
